Recently moved to Boise, Idaho, after living in a small ski resort town called Sun Valley for 25 years. I make a "living" by designing and fabricating fine jewelry. You can see it at www.esoterica-id.com, if you like. Love to explore the wilds, hike and read voraciously. And once or twice a week, pull out all the stops and make a decent meal!
My favorite things to cook
Love to make comfort foods, soups, stews, with a twist. Have a mean sweet tooth, hence the screen name, so when there's time there's cookies. Make a mean stir fry, too!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Chicken a la King on biscuits, Thai and Caribbean curries, spanakopita, meat loaf, zucchini puffs. For sweets, banana bread, strawberry-rhubarb crisp, rum balls, toffee bars and big, soft ginger cookies.
My cooking triumphs
Kicking a 20 pound turkey into a 15 pound oven one memorable Thanksgiving on our live aboard 32' sloop in the Caribbean, many eons ago. Also making pies in my old camper. Oh, and making a giant blueberry muffin in a dutch oven, while on a river trip in Hell's canyon..
My cooking tragedies
My now grown children love to remind me about the time I steamed up a bunch of broccoli without really examining it first, and we ate about half of it before realizing it was liberally "peppered" with insects!

Apple Coffee Cake
Had doubts while mixing it - the dough to apple ratio looked strange, all apple and hardly any batter. But it came out amazing, moist and delish. I did reduce the sugar since I live at 6000'. Will make this again, maybe with a sour apple like Granny Smith.Just noticed that GS apples are called for, I used Galas, which were ok.

Lemon Meringue Pie III
Have to admit I didn't add quite as much meringue to the lemon filling as instructed, and it came out wonderfully. Flavor, texture, everything perfect. Would make this again in a heartbeat!

Dave's Big Raisin Cookies
Just made these with Red Flame raisins from Indio, CA. I guess I thought the raisins could carry them, followed the recipe. They turned out a bit bland for my taste, could see adding nuts and more spice, and some butter. A vintage recipe worth tweaking.
