White Bean Chicken Breast Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2013
I made this tonight, when the boyfriend came home sick. Spicy food always makes him feel better, and man, was this spicy. I made a few changes--I didn't have chipotle or ancho chile powder on hand, so I used a generic chili powder blend, and threw a couple adobo chipotle peppers in with the spices, deseeded and chopped. I added a little cinnamon and just a dash of cloves, because I think they play with the other flavors well, and add a hint of complexity. This is a keeper. It's quick, it's cheap, it's delicious, and if you have a 3 quart skillet, it only uses one pan. A perfect dinner to spice up the middle of the week. No pun intended, honestly.

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup

Reviewed: May 27, 2012
I had high hopes for this recipe since it's so popular, but honestly, I found it a little lackluster. It was missing something--it wasn't bad, just mediocre.

Key Lime Pie VII

Reviewed: May 27, 2012
Incredibly simple--has a perfect balance of sweet and tartness. I was reminded of the scene in Dexter, where Camilla says she is in a perpetual search for the perfect Key Lime Pie. Search over.

Chicken Pot Pie IX

Reviewed: May 27, 2012
This was awesome. It owes a little something to personal interpretation, but it is an excellent base recipe. I used puff pastry for the crust, and cut out the celery seed in favor of garlic, thyme and rosemary.

Indian Chicken Curry (Murgh Kari)

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2012
This was excellent. The only this I changed was that I cut up the chicken prior to browning and and added a pinch of black pepper. It didn't need anything else--it was outstanding. I will definitely make this again.

Butterbeer III

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2011
This was a great interpretation of Butterbeer. I always imagined it just a little richer and creamier, but pretty close. Essentially, this was a butterscotch soda. They're a little hard to finish. It was VERY sweet, and is definitely a thing of moderation, but as they sat and separated, I thought they lost some of the overwhelming sweetness and got better and better. This would also be great with a shot of rum per glass, maybe mixed with the syrup instead of the cream soda. It would make it authentic.

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

Reviewed: Oct. 2, 2011
Alright, I tried this based on high reviews, and was simply not worth the hype. Chili should have great flavors, and when you bite into a bowl of red, you expect a certain something. Tasted like Wolf's Brand, had no spice, and frankly, had too many ingredients to be authentic. Pretty disappointing. I'm sorry, fella, but this shouldn't be in the top 20 recipes.

Caramelized Spicy Pumpkin Seeds

Reviewed: Sep. 23, 2011
These were a great deviation of traditional pumpkin seeds. I used brown sugar to caramelize, upped the cayenne, added nutmeg, and a dash of cloves. Boyfriend liked them, though he insists you aren't suppose to eat the shells.

Rainbow Clown Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2011
Very cute idea. I'd been trying for months to impress my boyfriend's friends, and when one of their birthdays rolled around, I decided to go all out on the cake. Didn't marbleize the colors, because I thought stripes worked better for the rainbow idea. I used gel colors, and the colors turned out vibrant. The technique did seem to reduce the yield (I had to go through two boxes of mix for a two layer 9 inch cake) so that's something to be aware of.

Snickerdoodles V

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2009
These were good, but the first batch got too hard, and lacked flavor. However, after the dough was frozen, they came out fluffy and light. My suggestions are to freeze the dough, leave out the salt, and add 1/2 tsp. of vanilla. Also, try dipping the dough in melted butter before you coat it. It gave me a much crispier coating.
