I love to cook and modify recipes to suit the crowd I'm entertaining. I get great ideas from this site!
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake and I adapt seasonally, from pumpkin pancakes/cheesecakes, to berries in the summer, to gourmet chocolate, biscotti, and cookies for Christmas. I also love making Italian, Middle Eastern, and good old Midwest slow-cookin!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love to find shortcuts in all food I make while still not losing any flavor. The only exception are the Middle Eastern inspired recipes that my mom has handed down to me that I joke always requires an army to prepare. From rolling Dolma (stuffed grave-vine leaves) to Sour Kibbi (rice/beef mini patties) they're my safe go-to foods!
My cooking triumphs
My biggest cooking triumph was a challenge from my mother. I had complained that she had been making too much beef lately and I wanted some variety in the form of chicken, so she asked me to make dinner. I decided to make Chicken Picatta (from this site) with a fresh lemon butter sauce atop garlic parm angel hair pasta and chocolate mocha pot de creme for dessert. In addition to receiving rave reviews from all the family (brothers, mom, and dad), they asked me to make dinner once a week!
My cooking tragedies
It's always a challenge to move to a new place, but it's especially challenging when baking! I changed from an electric stove to a gas stove and decided to make some chocolate zucchini bread for a potluck. I had made this recipe a million times and I thought I was an expert. After 3 hours of work, the loaves just would not rise. Despite using a brand new can of baking powder, and following the same exact recipe, I had no idea what I did wrong. Disappointed and hating my new place, I made deviled eggs for the potluck and threw away my disappointing loaves. It wasn't until I failed at making pancakes that I checked the flour...and noticed it was a blend of powdered sugar (mostly) and flour. Mystery solved! I hadn't lost my skill!
