I'm trying to balance a crazy life: college, job, and family. Food is essential in life, and especially in college. It's how I lure friends into moving furniture, get through finals week, survive office dinner parties, and help out at family gatherings.
My favorite things to cook
Salad. Not the healthy kind so much as the mayo-infused kind - Potato salad, egg salad, macaroni salad, etc.
My favorite ingredients are Okra, Goat Cheese, Cilantro, and fresh peppers. (Definitely not all at once!)
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Grandmother on my fathers side is everything to our family, and especially to our kitchen. She has been cooking to feed a family for 70+ years, and has special recipes for just about everything. Handmade noodles, hermit cookies, pumpkin pie, beans and cornbread - all of the traditional Appalachian foods at all of the traditional holidays.
My cooking triumphs
Are few and far between. (Haha)
Actually, I'm trying to change my lifestyle and move away from processed foods. My ideology is that if you can't look at it and see where it came from, it's probably got some nasty chemical in it that's bad for you.
To that end, I'm trying to learn how to make my own versions of things like Mayo and sausage - cooking disasters to follow. :)
My cooking tragedies
Sugar cookies. No, seriously. I have tried many times to make those cute little shape-able cookies that everyone else makes at Christmas, and they never turn out right.
