Where the Magic Happens. . .

I "found" AllRecipes in November of 2009.
I'm not exactly sure WHY I didn't find it sooner. I have some guesses. Kids, job(s), marriage, divorce, house fire, knee surgery, LIFE.
At the time I'd been unemployed for 15 monthes. Job hunting in the new century/millenium means you MUST have access to a computer. I haven't found ANY locations where I can apply in person. Even if they have a Help Wanted sign in the window (ie. Dollar Store) they will tell you to apply on line. So I had been spending MUCH time at my computer.
Looking for a job was my "crash course" in computers. I'd had a computer. The kids used it for homework (or so they said) but I usually only used it for email and my card game (euchre). I'd looked up music and movies and books. I didn't really know what all was available out there on the www (EVERYTHING, it turns out). I knew there were "bad" things and I'd tried to be vigilant with my kids computer usage, issued all the various parental warnings, limited and monitored their use. Still, their familiarity and knowledge of all things "tech" FAR exceeded my own.
It was right around Thanksgiving and I was preparing the "Big Feast" (all my kids favorite holiday is Thanksgiving). I had my menu set, but I was looking for a way to "improve" my turkey pot pie (leftovers!). And, hopefully, find an Oatmeal Pie recipe that I had misplaced. . .or couldn't find in the many cookbooks on the shelf.
I found both of those things and SOOOOO much more!
When I "first" arrived, I signed up and didn't fill out the profile properly. My name was gray. I found the Buzz right after I found the recipes (lucky me. I COULD have ended up wandering around for years. . .but I noticed my cursor change when it floated over "blue" writing and found myself "inside" a post. . .WHOOPEE!!)
"I can "talk" to these people!" I thought. . .I've been smitten ever since. After eating, talking is one of my favorite things.
I completely hi-jacked someone's post when I asked why my name was gray. Everyone hopped in to help me turn my name "blue" . . .and I was off.
I didn't know what DS, DH, TIA or any of that other stuff meant, but I was determined to learn. It was the language that all my new friends spoke.
There were questions asked that I could actually answer!
lisa posted everyday "What's for dinner?"and I found sooo many NEW RECIPES!
Baking Nana had a recipe for CHEESE!! Seriously?! I HAVE to do this. So, I gathered my supplies, and with Baking Nana firmly holding my hand (well, virtually), I MADE MOZZARELLA!! I thought I had "ruined" it and then, (Magic, again!) it turned glossy and stretchy. I DID IT!!
AND! You could take pictures of your FOOD! (where's my camera?)
That Christmas, I tried several "new" recipes (Pear/Bleu cheese salad, German Rouladen, Fudge Cheesecake) . . . I couldn't do the pictures for a while because my kids actually LAUGHED at me. . .but eventually, I even managed a few of those.
I didn't find the blogs until the magical day that Scotdog made a gift of a supporting membership. That "upped" my learning curve.
I remember the day I found gderr's blog. I read the whole thing and bawled. And prayed.
There was a Saturday night "game"!! Too Much Fun!! You can "play" with recipes!!
I read Mike Harvey's blog, and CindyL's. . . and prayed.
Folks lost their beloved fur babies (weep), had surgery, new medical issues relating to diet changes. . .and they were loved and supported through lifes trials. You would never imagine all this could come from a recipe site.
AND THEN, they actually started meeting IN PERSON!! You talk about excitement! (and MORE magic).
There were those wild women in OH, and CA! Then CatHill had one, then gderr!
And Las Vegas. . .the diamond in the desert.
Did I mention I'm unemployed? Unbelieveably, I was magically given the gift of visiting Las Vegas to meet some of the best people I've ever been fortunate enough to know.
Remember those "parental warnings"? I think my sister was afraid I was going off to Las Vegas to be sold into slavery.
I knew better :).
mauigirl knows how to hostess a PARTY!!! WOW!! She is so warm, kind and accommodating. We all had a perfectly magical day meeting in her lovely home and visiting and EATING!
Magnolia Blossom was SUCH an awesome roommate, now "forever friend".
We even made our own little magical rendezvous monthes later.
For all of these MAGIC moments, and many I've neglected to mention, I want to thank all of you.
You've changed my life.
I couldn't be more grateful.
You humble me.
I love you.

Well, M'Lady Sparkle, you wrote a very nice blog and I find everything very true. I found this site very supportive during some trying times and will always be grateful to everybody- especially those (such as you) that stuck with my blog to be sure everything was well with me. See you in three weeks!

Oh you sweetie! My hat will be forever off to you for taking on that daunting task of making that memory book for Cindy. I remember my first days trying to make "contact" on AR. WFDM?, Good EatNZ & Shanon K can tell you first hand how computer challenged I am. I have learned so much since '09 and have made some of the finest friends. And I can't wait to MEET you! Don't forget to let Mr. Harvey out of the trunk for potty breaks on the way here :)(:

Great blog, Sparkle Britches! Aren't the friendships and support we have found here Magical. I am going to miss you in Las Vegas this year - but I know that we will meet up again one of these days. We sure broke all the 'rules' didn't we?

Mike Harvey! I'm getting so excited about our upcoming magical adventure :) . . . to visit Cat Hill! :) !! I tried to explain to my DD who met with xraybarb and Ken and Marianne (when she asked AGAIN how I know these people). . .that we're just a bunch of crazy people from a recipe site who like to vacation/travel to meet others from the site. . .she said "Oh." LOL!!! I'm looking forward to my "vacation"! (HUGS) Baking Nana, Rules? We don't need no stinking RULES!! :) I'm sure we'll see each other again. Until then, you live in my heart. . .hope it's not getting too crowded in there.

I, too, just LOVE the friendships and support I've gained through this awesome site. It was a huge privilege getting to meet you! I still use the washcloths you crocheted. My kitchen sink is never without one :)

Beautiful blog Miss Sparkle Britches! Can't wait for Kansas City!! Oh, please remind me to let Mike out of the trunk for the potty breaks. (Thanks for the reminder Cat) Hugs!

May 15, 2012 4:35 am
I have formulated a plan to take care of that. All I have to do is drill a hole in the trunk lid and another into the cabin (for cross ventilation).

May 15, 2012 7:46 am
HAHAHA!! Mike can't sit in the truck. Logistically, we'd have to leave it open if he were sitting. . .besides, we have to cosmically ponder cranial capacity, LOL!!!

May 16, 2012 8:39 am
LOL, Sparkly Britches, I was also hoooked when I found out I could TALK to these people. I know there are some who wish this was not possible, but I am sure they know by now to stay out of my threads or risk the chaos, drama, whatever they want to call it:) Please let Mike out of the trunk and have a little bowl of water for him on regular intervals:)

May 16, 2012 2:17 pm
Ha! Well, there are probably those who wish I couldn't/wouldn't talk so much, LOL!! and what's a lil chaos & drama in a family?? Feels just like home. :) Well, I just can't see Mike in the trunk all the way to Kansas City. . .although, the car WILL be full of female hormones. . .he just might make that choice :|

May 16, 2012 2:31 pm
That's what I'm thinkin'!

May 16, 2012 3:30 pm
LMAO!!!

May 17, 2012 6:10 am
LMAO!!! Poor Mike, all the estrogen in the car:( At least travelling with that many women, you know there will be many potty breaks for you to get some air. You should buy a cheap low rider trailer to tow behind. You could set up a Laz-ee-boy lounger, bungee strap a cooler to the trailer for refreshments, and a large plastic bin full of munchees. If you chain a generator to the trailer you can have TV and a light in case you want to read a magazine....oh wait, that would make you look like our redneck convoy driving down the road.

May 17, 2012 9:27 am
Great ideas, gramma but Magnolia Blossom would, I'm sure, get to whipping that trailer to see if she could flip me out of that lounger, sell that generator for a pair of shoes and commandeer all containers of food and drink.

*cosmically pondering a portable "man cave" *

I can see the cosmos sinking in the south of us! Maybe you're pondering too hard!

Hi LadySparkle- Nice blog, nice reminder about why we all keep coming back to AR!

May 19, 2012 8:15 am
Great blog. I love "talking" to everyone here. DH used to laugh when I took pictures. Now he asks if I've got my pictures before he fills his plate! My morning would not be the same if not for Lisa's WFD post. Baking Nana saved me tons of money when I started making her laundry soap. We really need a round up around Indy or your place! Send me an email soon!

Hi Rohnda! Thank you! It's so true, isn't it! Lucky Noodles. . .I can't find your email. . .email me. . .ladysparkle55@gmail . . . I'm very busy until Wed. and won't get to check everyday but I WILL answer when I get back home! :)

BTW, Mike is beginning to worry! Good job, the plan has been put into place successfully. I think he should be afraid, "be very afraid!"

May 21, 2012 5:42 pm

About Me
Living with two grown children (19 and 24)and two dogs. Presently working on a web page for e-commerce.
My favorite things to cook
Anything, really. What do you like to eat? :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm not sure we have traditions, just great gatherings food and love.
My cooking triumphs
I taught myself to make Danish Pastry about 20 yrs. ago. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and ohhh so yummy !!
My cooking tragedies
The very first time I tried to make bread. . . I baked clever little bricks. They LOOKED like bread. . . very deceiving. . .played with them in the back yard (I was 15. . . the dogs "fetched" them, but even they couldn't eat them.)
