I "found" AllRecipes in November of 2009.
I'm not exactly sure WHY I didn't find it sooner. I have some guesses. Kids, job(s), marriage, divorce, house fire, knee surgery, LIFE.
At the time I'd been unemployed for 15 monthes. Job hunting in the new century/millenium means you MUST have access to a computer. I haven't found ANY locations where I can apply in person. Even if they have a Help Wanted sign in the window (ie. Dollar
Store) they will tell you to apply on line. So I had been spending MUCH time at my computer.
Looking for a job was my "crash course" in computers. I'd had a computer. The kids used it for homework (or so they said) but I usually only used it for email and my card game (euchre). I'd looked up music and movies and books. I didn't really know what
all was available out there on the www (EVERYTHING, it turns out). I knew there were "bad" things and I'd tried to be vigilant with my kids computer usage, issued all the various parental warnings, limited and monitored their use. Still, their familiarity
and knowledge of all things "tech" FAR exceeded my own.
It was right around Thanksgiving and I was preparing the "Big Feast" (all my kids favorite holiday is Thanksgiving). I had my menu set, but I was looking for a way to "improve" my turkey pot pie (leftovers!). And, hopefully, find an Oatmeal Pie recipe
that I had misplaced. . .or couldn't find in the many cookbooks on the shelf.
I found both of those things and SOOOOO much more!
When I "first" arrived, I signed up and didn't fill out the profile properly. My name was gray. I found the Buzz right after I found the recipes (lucky me. I COULD have ended up wandering around for years. . .but I noticed my cursor change when it floated
over "blue" writing and found myself "inside" a post. . .WHOOPEE!!)
"I can "talk" to these people!" I thought. . .I've been smitten ever since. After eating, talking is one of my favorite things.
I completely hi-jacked someone's post when I asked why my name was gray. Everyone hopped in to help me turn my name "blue" . . .and I was off.
I didn't know what DS, DH, TIA or any of that other stuff meant, but I was determined to learn. It was the language that all my new friends spoke.
There were questions asked that I could actually answer!
lisa posted everyday "What's for dinner?"and I found sooo many NEW RECIPES!
Baking Nana had a recipe for CHEESE!! Seriously?! I HAVE to do this. So, I gathered my supplies, and with Baking Nana firmly holding my hand (well, virtually), I MADE MOZZARELLA!! I thought I had "ruined" it and then, (Magic, again!) it turned glossy and
stretchy. I DID IT!!
AND! You could take pictures of your FOOD! (where's my camera?)
That Christmas, I tried several "new" recipes (Pear/Bleu cheese salad, German Rouladen, Fudge Cheesecake) . . . I couldn't do the pictures for a while because my kids actually LAUGHED at me. . .but eventually, I even managed a few of those.
I didn't find the blogs until the magical day that Scotdog made a gift of a supporting membership. That "upped" my learning curve.
I remember the day I found gderr's blog. I read the whole thing and bawled. And prayed.
There was a Saturday night "game"!! Too Much Fun!! You can "play" with recipes!!
I read Mike Harvey's blog, and CindyL's. . . and prayed.
Folks lost their beloved fur babies (weep), had surgery, new medical issues relating to diet changes. . .and they were loved and supported through lifes trials. You would never imagine all this could come from a recipe site.
AND THEN, they actually started meeting IN PERSON!! You talk about excitement! (and MORE magic).
There were those wild women in OH, and CA! Then CatHill had one, then gderr!
And Las Vegas. . .the diamond in the desert.
Did I mention I'm unemployed? Unbelieveably, I was magically given the gift of visiting Las Vegas to meet some of the best people I've ever been fortunate enough to know.
Remember those "parental warnings"? I think my sister was afraid I was going off to Las Vegas to be sold into slavery.
I knew better :).
mauigirl knows how to hostess a PARTY!!! WOW!! She is so warm, kind and accommodating. We all had a perfectly magical day meeting in her lovely home and visiting and EATING!
Magnolia Blossom was SUCH an awesome roommate, now "forever friend".
We even made our own little magical rendezvous monthes later.
For all of these MAGIC moments, and many I've neglected to mention, I want to thank all of you.
You've changed my life.
I couldn't be more grateful.
You humble me.
I love you.
