About the Book

As you all know, I'm working on making the post for CindyL. into a book to give her. I'd like to share with you my ideas here and ask for your suggestions on a few things.
First, my ideas.
I have a title that I'm  not happy with so if any of you have suggestions, I would be grateful. Let me just say, I will choose a title that I find fitting. I'm not looking for drama. I'm asking for help. Please do not be offended if I don't choose your title. I don't want to hurt anyone, or slight any one. That is definately NOT my intention. (I love you all)
I AM happy with my author, A. R. Friends.
I want RNG's recipe in the front with everyones comments/ratings.
Then, I want the thread, much as we see it without the opening on every page. Just a continuous "conversation".
After that, I want to include the recipes in cookbook form so that she will have a useful cookbook, as well as our silliness and warm wishes.
I have a cousin who is an IT manager at a bank and she will make time for me this weekend to teach me how to convert this to PDF format (crash course) so it can be printed and bound. There is a book publisher online that I hope to use if I hear back from them (free consult). If I don't hear back from them, I may have to take the whole project to a book bindery in my town. At any rate, this will follow AFTER I've converted the whole thing.
The final expense will depend on how many pages are involved. I'm certain it will be well over $100.00, but I will keep you all informed. I am determined to see this through, even if I have to save up my own money to do it.
Now, here's a sticky wicket. We love our avatars. I know I love my avatar. It would be very helpful for the continuity of the project, if after I start converting, you do not change your avatar. I promise that once I start, I will stay on it until I'm finished and then it won't matter anymore. But, you see, if I start and in the middle you change your avatar, you will appear as two different people in the "conversation". I will not start before next Monday. So, if you want to change it between now and then, that's fine. After that, until the thread is completed, it would be helpful if you kept your avatar the same. I'll let you know when that part is finished.
I expect the recipes will take me longest anyway as I want to "organize" them into cookbook format so that it is easy for Ms. Cindy to use.
You all have been wonderful to help with this! Posting for pictures, etc. It makes me very emotional.
Also, for the cover, I thought one of the pictures of Marley might be nice. Since that is how we "see" her and Marley will be her closest companion and comfort in the days ahead.
I can't thank you all enough.
This isn't "my" project, although I'll be making the final decisions. I didn't (couldn't) have written that conversation. I want very much to be respectful of all of you and hope you understand.
Thanks so much, for being you.
Mar. 23, 2011 12:32 pm
I am astounded you are taking on such a huge project...I hope you have LOTS of free time! I wish you the best of luck completing this (I don't have a title or anything to suggest), I just want to say that you are an angel for taking this on... ♥
Mar. 23, 2011 12:37 pm
LS, I think this is a wonderful idea and I would be happy to help any way that I can. I use Open Office so I can save any document in .pdf format. It is open source free software from Sun Microsystems and a safe download. I'm in pretty much the same boat as you financially, but I will happily send you something to cover any costs. Let me know how I can help. BigShotsMom@Yahoo.com
Mar. 23, 2011 12:53 pm
"A story of love, friendship and support" "A recipe of friendship" "Cooks/Friends in the kitchen" I'm sure you will choose something wonderful or get some good ideas from the brainstorm.
Mar. 23, 2011 12:53 pm
Gitano, pretty much all I have is time and I think Ms.Cindy would enjoy knowing how much we all care for her. BSM, I believe I will be using Open Office (the pictures being the tricksiest part). I will email you, thank you! :)
Mar. 23, 2011 12:54 pm
Thanks Linda ♥ great photos, btw :)
Mar. 23, 2011 12:56 pm
Thank you ... your very kind and sweet!!
Mar. 23, 2011 1:14 pm
LS you are an angel. Give a call out please if you need help in any way.
Mar. 23, 2011 3:09 pm
I love all your ideas!! I will go edit my blog right to include a link to this blog so everyone is up to date on it all. I must change my Avatar as I don't even know who this darling baby is!! lol I really like "Marathon of Hope" for title or some play on "Danny's Song", "Caring for Cindy", just throwing some out there, I will try to of more. |A brainstorming thread might bring ideas in quickly!
Mar. 23, 2011 3:19 pm
What about simply the title of "the" recipe, Marathon of Love? Thanks for doing such an incredibly wonderful thing for Cindy.
Mar. 23, 2011 5:55 pm
Love all of your ideas, Ms. Sparkle. I think Marley on the cover is very appropriate. I think 'by A.R. Friends' is brilliant. Marathon of Love would seem most appropriate unless some smart cookie comes up with something clever.
Mar. 23, 2011 6:06 pm
Lady Sparkle, I live less than an hour from you and I "retired" from graphic arts. I would be happy to give you any help you may need. Email: pita2wife@peoplepc.com
Mar. 23, 2011 6:11 pm
Well, Good EatNZ took the words directly out of my mouth! Except thank you for taking this on. AND great realization about the avatars - if it had been me, I probably wouldn't have realized it until I was done. LS, I missed adding your email address to my contacts the other day (yesterday?) - would you m ind posting it again? Or sending it to me @ xraybarb81@aim.com - thank you!!!!
Mar. 23, 2011 6:16 pm
Thank you for your comments and support. Mike Harvey, God Bless You! I will email you. While I was doing the dishes tonight I was pondering the title (can you tell I'm consumed by this project?) LOL!! And I was thinking about Cooking With Julia. . . And so then, Cooking With Friends came to mind and Recipes of Love for Every Occasion, maybe?
Mar. 23, 2011 6:18 pm
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww!! Mike, what a sweet offer! You must have made it home from the party okay - despite the issues with your pilot (=
Mar. 23, 2011 6:19 pm
I like the second one, LS - or the recipe title also. (I get like that - just a bit obsessive at times (= We call it "like a dog with a bone" =D)
Mar. 23, 2011 6:27 pm
LOL xraybarb, exactly right! Like a dog with a bone, LOL!! I was thinking of ALL of that as the title Cooking With Friends: Recipes of Love for Every Occasion :) ♥
Mar. 23, 2011 6:37 pm
Lady Sparkle, it's very difficult to not be consumed- everybody feels the emotions.
Mar. 23, 2011 9:33 pm
How wonderful of you to do this LadySparkle. I will send you some money when the time comes. All title ideas sound good. Here's another one or something to play with-- "Can there ever be too many cooks in the kitchen?"
Mar. 23, 2011 11:20 pm
LS, let me thank you too for taking this on. Count on me for a little green to help too. Funny thing about the avatars, in the first part of the (infamous)famous thread, I still had my Lucky Elton Leprechaun face on and someone commented on that. The next day while the thread was still in full force, I changed to this one. This is my official Easter dress so I'll be outfitted in this get up til Easter or afterwards. Hopefully that's okay with you. As far as a title, I like what Rohnda suggested and was thinking of something along similar lines like "Come on in, the door is open!" as if we were sitting around a kitchen table having our coffee and gabbing with the neighbors and another one just dropped in. Very much like that thread.
Mar. 23, 2011 11:21 pm
by the way, Mike Harvey.....you are an angel. You know that right?
Mar. 24, 2011 3:34 am
Count me in, LS.
Mar. 24, 2011 4:34 am
Great idea, LS and by all means since you are taking this on you should have final say for the title. Sounds like you already have some good suggestions! Thanks and I will be happy to send you some $$! ♥
Mar. 24, 2011 6:49 am
My heart goes out to Cindy and her family and please email me I would love to help out anyway I can. freckles@snet.net
Mar. 24, 2011 7:46 am
As always, you are busy working on a work of love miss Ladysparkle:) Thanks for being you XO
Mar. 24, 2011 8:02 am
Thanks EveryOne. Carrie, thank you for mentioning this in your blog :). This is like an "All Hands On Deck" project, LOL! I am compiling an email Group of interested folks. If you have posted your email addy here for my benefit and would prefer I delete it, I'd be happy to, just let me know. I'll be checking in periodically but expect to be pretty busy in the next few days. If you have a question/comment that you'd like me to see immediately, my email addy is ladysparkle55@gmail.com Thanks again. :)
Mar. 24, 2011 11:40 am
LS, I just sent my donation off to you. Again, thank you for taking this on. It will indeed be a loving tribute.
Mar. 24, 2011 12:04 pm
This is lame but how about: "making your potluck a success" Or "How to carry on the successful carry in" ?
Mar. 24, 2011 2:53 pm
Thank you so much for doing this LS - you know you have my support! I really like Avon's suggestion. "Come on in, the door is open!" Bless you for tackling this.....and bless you Mike for offering to help.
Mar. 24, 2011 4:02 pm
I like that too. Be cool if there were a picture of Marley sitting in the door. . . going to go look :)
Mar. 24, 2011 5:16 pm
So glad you are managing this LS! If ever anything I can do from here... just shout! Good to know Mike is helpful should you get overwhelmed with it all! :) OH - and Mike? - LOVING your email addy! LOLOLOL
Mar. 24, 2011 10:09 pm
wow Lady Sparkle, Count me in here is my E-mail Gammakatsy@q.com. Let me know what I can do!! Thanks
Mar. 25, 2011 5:49 am
LadySparkle, you are so deserving of your name! This is a wonderful project you are weaving together and I would love to help. I like the titles that are more personal in nature and think Marley on the cover is perfect! That is how I see Cindy, as her Marley avatar with the bunny ears! There is a great picture of her "Southern Porch" in her profile that might work somehow, esp. with the 'come on in' suggested above. Southern porches are often the social center of the home! Just a thought, I have faith in whatever you come up with and will help in any way I can! wyattdogster@comcast.net
Mar. 25, 2011 5:52 am
If you are able, let me know which recipes are still missing photos (if any) and I'll get started cooking!
Mar. 25, 2011 5:56 am
Wyattdogster (and anyone else who's interested) 228498 is the recipe request# with all the recipes needing pictures. I'm not sure if it ended up being a complete list or not.
Mar. 25, 2011 6:33 am
LadySparkle, the book of the thread is a wonderful idea! I haven't contributed to the thread but I've been checking on it and the comments on the 'recipe'! I would love to contribute to the book and/or what Carrie has been looking into. My home e-mail is alexandrahotham@gmail.com - please let me know when you would like people to send you money and where to send it to! Whoever ends up collecting for the memorial bench (or whatever is decided on) please let me know too!
Mar. 25, 2011 7:42 am
LadyS, bless you and all that you are doing for our friend. I've not been around much but when Witchywoman told me about Cindy and Danny...well, my heart breaks for them and their loved ones. I'd like to suggest a title. "Dear Friends are Food for the Soul"
Mar. 25, 2011 9:38 am
Thank you so much for taking this on! I just wanted to mention regarding the book binding, I do believe that Costco does this? I think they have a program online where you can arrange all the pages as you like them, and then they print it into a hardcover book, lots of people do that for wedding pictures these days.
Mar. 25, 2011 10:34 am
I like 1gdcowgrl's but just maybe "Friends - Food for the Soul." Or some variation of that.
Mar. 25, 2011 10:35 am
...1gdcowgrl's suggestion:
Mar. 25, 2011 10:47 am
LS, what a great idea and big hug for taking on this project. Put me on your contact list for this project. Very happy to support your effort. magna5560@yahoo.com
Mar. 25, 2011 10:49 am
Had you given any thought to making multiple copies for purchase, with profits perhaps going to a memorial or cancer research
Mar. 25, 2011 11:25 am
I will also help out in whatever capacity I can - skl midcon @ yahoo.com (no spaces). Here's a title suggestion - "The Thread That Binds Us". I also love Magnolia Blossom's suggestion about the extra copy proceeds!!
Mar. 25, 2011 3:10 pm
LS, you are truly an angel! Thank you for taking on this project- I am sure it will mean so much to Cindy! Count me in for anything I can help with: rachel_f22@hotmail.com. The only thing that popped into my mind regarding the title was something like "Lepp of Faith: A Marathon of Love." That may sound silly, but luckily you have gotten some great suggestions :) Oh, and I like the extra copy idea too!
Mar. 25, 2011 4:12 pm
Not LS - but I thought I would chime in here. When LS checked with AR regarding using the recipes in the book - she was given the OK as long as it wasn't for profit. So, although, if all goes according to plan - the book could be made available to anyone who would like one - but it would be AT COST. Any money that LS collects for the book above and beyond the actual cost of the book will be sent to Cindy.
Mar. 25, 2011 6:14 pm
Here is the link to all the recipes that need pictures. It would be great to have every recipe have a "face". - http://allrecipes.com/Recipe-Exchange/Recipe-Request.aspx?requestID=228498
Mar. 25, 2011 8:59 pm
Lady Sparkle -- it's great to see how much support you hve, including mine. I'm not sure what i can do from here (but do think I still have a few greenbacks tucked away), but I am lmnsutton@gmail.com Also, if you look closely at Cindy's current profile pic of Marley, I think she is sitting next to a laptop with AR on the screen -- so I think its perfect!
Mar. 25, 2011 9:45 pm
Please count me in to help out in any way! Just a thought on the pic for the front...On the Caring Bridge sight there are a number of wonderful photos of Cindy and Danny having a good time together that would look nice...(happy memories together)...would be wonderful memories every time she looked at the book!
Mar. 25, 2011 9:47 pm
I also don't know what I can do from New Zealand but can someone please email me at chile_chicken@hotmail.com and fill me in on exactly what I can do to help out.
Mar. 26, 2011 7:08 am
What a generous and giving spirit you have, LS, and everyone getting involved as well. This is a special community. Wonderful ideas, all of them. Count me in to help in whatever way possible.
Mar. 26, 2011 7:35 am
Hello :) I'm a graphic designer and a semi-professional bookbinder, so I just thought I'd throw in my two cents about getting the book printed and bound. There's a good chance you know some of this already, but better safe than sorry, eh? 1) Make sure you include bleed & crop marks in your pages. 2) Decide ahead of time what type of binding you want. If you want it to be a proper hard cover book, you'll want to do a sewn book with a case. This will require the pages to be laid out specially (in signatures of 16 pages) so the book can be sewn together. If you want the book to be perfect bound (your typical inexpensive soft cover book), then you don't need to worry about signatures, but the book won't be nearly as durable. If you want to avoid signatures and still have the book be durable, I'd recommend Japanese stab binding (with a hard or soft cover). If you go with Japanese stab binding, though, you'll need quite generous gutters to avoid the content being 'swallowed' by the binding at the centre of the book. Hope that helps!
Mar. 26, 2011 7:56 am
LS - Thank you for taking on this project - you're an angel! Count me in for cash (send me an email with your address?) and I'm heading over to see what recipes need pictures. Don't know how else to help but I'm in Noblesville - about 2 hour drive from you! I used to work with a printer and layed out the company newsletter on a difficult program - but it sounds like you've got better folks above me here. no spaces: lucky noodles at yahoo dot com
Mar. 26, 2011 1:25 pm
Dear Lady Sparkle - I do not understand what you are trying to accomplish with your book. I saw this blog on AR, was curious, so I clicked on the link. Then, all I read was what you have printed above - not enough information is given. Then, I clicked on the link above your informal essay, (About the Book), and I only received a "repeat" of what you had formerly written. Again, not enough information is being given to what is known as "the general audience", the actual potential buyers of this book. Therefore, I do not know what you are a.) talking about!, b.) actually doing, i.e., what are you trying to publish, and why!, c.) why everyone else on this blog is raving about this project!, and d.) what will distinguish THIS book from the literally hundreds of thousands of cookbooks that ARE INDEED published each year, from the literally millions of deserving cookbooks that need to be published as well? I am NOT saying this to be disrespectful to you in ANY way (that is not what I'm about), but - I am asking you a sincere question: what is going on here? Also, please consider this: do you have any experience in actually getting published? (That last sentence I wrote is, again, not intended to be a "rude" comment and/or question to you.) I do have some experience, and the process is difficult, to say the least. I have read nearly all of the comments on this blog, and again, I must state that I am puzzled as to what is truly occurring right here, right now. ~ All best, Lauren
Mar. 26, 2011 2:17 pm
How about "Thanks For The Memories, And Our Recipes..." I seem to always think in songs when moved.
Mar. 26, 2011 5:33 pm
PrettyMissusR- I am clearly not Lady Sparkle, but perhaps I can clear some things up...I suppose it may be baffling to someone who does not participate on the Recipe Buzz. You see, a very dear and wonderful lady in our little community is going through a terrible loss. We have sort of banned together to offer what support we can, which resulted in a very long thread on the Buzz (it was like a marathon of sorts, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always heartfelt). So, what LS is trying to do is transform that thread into book format so that it can be sent to our friend as a tangible reminder that we never stopped thinking about/praying for her. We feel that when she gets a chance to read it, it will comfort her to know how much we all care. So, the book is not being published for the masses, nor is it meant to be sold for profit- it is just a gesture of love and that is why it is so special to us:)
Mar. 26, 2011 8:24 pm
you need a hundred? consider that done. please call me at 706-587-9340. thanks for such a huge undertaking!
Mar. 26, 2011 9:14 pm
Ok. I've been busy today but I'm feeling much more comfortable with the task at hand. Let me try to address as many of these issues as possible. Baking Nana was absolutely right. The royalties will be 0.00. The book may be available for purchase for the cost of the printing, binding and shipping. PrettyMissusR, I don't think you'll be interested in this project unless you "know" who we are. I don't believe "the masses" will be affected by our book. It will never be advertised. It's intended for a very small group in the big picture, but very important to us. I will add those of you to my Group mail list who have expressed an interest and you will be receiving an email in the next day or so. gderr, I will call you :) Thanks Puck :)
Mar. 26, 2011 11:03 pm
To everyone on this thread, but especially Gary and Mike. You two are just really neat guys. Awesome stand-up men. How wonderful to get the chance to know truly great people. Just brings tears.
Mar. 27, 2011 6:04 am
PrettyMissusR...Whether or not you know Cindy Lepp, leave a note for her and her family. They are going through a rough time and need the support of the AR folks and anyone else that would be kind enough to extend a hand in friendship. Here’s the link. http://allrecipes.com/Cook/10228009/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=227523 Some AR folks have left notes at Caring Bridge, as well. Perhaps you would, also.

Redneck Gramma has a special recipe in tribute to The Lepp Family. It’s very unique. If you would add your own review, that would be a nice tribute to Redneck Gramma who has kept The Lepps foremost in our thoughts during this time. Here’ the link. .http://allrecipes.com/PersonalRecipe/62698822/Lepps-Marathon-of-Love/Detail.aspx

Lady Sparkle is compiling all of the AR activity regarding Lepps into a book for the family. This is going to be a huge project for her so, if you can, give her your support in some way. Here’s the link. http://allrecipes.com/Cook/11019003/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=228624

And Carrie is exploring ways to offer support for the Lepps, also. She has two posts regarding her effort. Read this one first. http://allrecipes.com/Cook/16319069/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=227961
 Read this link second. http://allrecipes.com/Cook/16319069/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=228644

Thanks Mike!

Mar. 27, 2011 7:45 am
A warning from this writing coach: Be cautious w/ online publishers, with or without the free consult. After you get an estimate, you might want to check with your local copy shop, Kinkos, Staples, etc. to see if they would bind it for you at a much reduced rate vs. an online publisher, although then you would have to sell/ship it yourself. Good luck!
Mar. 27, 2011 8:38 am
Hello Everyone!! OK, first things first! I will try and answer each and every one of you, so please bear with me! I am an American lady, currently living and working as a secondary mathematics teacher in Uganda, Africa. I changed careers in mid-life (from a chemist), to pursue my dream of being a mathematics teacher. In doing so, I have had my share of grief along the way, so I am now beginning to understand what Lady Sparkle is going through. I almost died from Grave's disease (a type of hyperthyroidism) 8 years ago - last rites, the whole nine yards! But that is now in the past!! :) Again, first things first: Puck responded, so I will try and answer, as best I can. Alright, now I know what has happened - and I am indeed extremely sorry for your loss, Lady Sparkle! And what a magnificent name (and avatar!) you have chosen, I might add, but I am digressing, as usual! :) You can reach me by email at the following address: lauren.rowell44@gmail.com. If you feel the need to talk with me, we can then exchange phone numbers, and I can call you from my computer, using Skype. (Don't worry, only costs me 2 cents a minute to call a land line anywhere in the world!) OK, back to Puck!! That makes sense - I have not participated in the Recipe Buzz on AR- where is it?? And of course, I love the idea of helping out, in any way I can!! I understand how important it is for LS to feel comforted in her time of great need - that is one of the ways in which she will feel better, in time. I will get back to you...to be continued!! ~Lauren
Mar. 27, 2011 8:54 am
Lauren! Bless your heart! I'm not the one in need of comfort. Our dear friend Ms. Cindy Lepp is. Mike Harvey included the links. I will email you. I'm just trying to combine all our thoughts and best wishes, and have it made into a book for our dear friend. I'm sorry you've experienced so much hardship and bless your efforts in Uganda. You will be hearing from me.
Mar. 27, 2011 7:46 pm

Hi again, Lady Sparkle! Thank you for the personal email you sent to me last night (my time)! I have not responded to your "second" letter yet (does everyone understand? - OK, I didn't think so!), but I will. :) Thanks again for reminding me to look at Mike Harvey's links! (And to Mike Harvey, I now understand what is going on, so thank you SO very much for taking the time to post all of those links!) I'm posting on this public link for a reason, and that is to say that I'm a very experienced cook, and will help out in any way I possibly can!! Do you need a recipe for Chicken Fajitas with Pineapple Salsa? You got it! How about my dad's recipe for Russian Soup? What about my manicotti recipe? It's yours! This is such a great idea - peace to all of you! I may not be writing for a few days, as I'm very busy at work, but during the ensuing days, I'll be thinking about this project! Have a nice evening everyone, and take care! ~ Sincerely, Lauren
Mar. 28, 2011 1:22 pm
I just had to pop back in and comment...it never ceases to amaze me how folks come here to this little cooking website looking for a recipe and find a family. How everyone bonds together and shares in our good times and those not so good times. <3 God Bless us all.<3
Mar. 28, 2011 2:30 pm

Mar. 30, 2011 12:22 pm
I know Cindy is going through a very rough time, but I need to say, if ever I am having a down moment, all I have to do is come here and I am so uplifted by all the love and caring shown for each other as well as for Cindy and her family. I only know you by your comments but would be honored to tell anyone you are my friends. I would also like to help, please contact me at Redcwolf@aol.com for what you may need. Bless you all!

Hi LadySparkle, What a wonderful gift to give Cindy and her family. I'm sure it will be treasured. Since the book is about the threads on here, just thought I'd through out ""Threads" of Love" for a title. I will e-mail you.

About Me
Living with two grown children (19 and 24)and two dogs. Presently working on a web page for e-commerce.
My favorite things to cook
Anything, really. What do you like to eat? :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm not sure we have traditions, just great gatherings food and love.
My cooking triumphs
I taught myself to make Danish Pastry about 20 yrs. ago. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and ohhh so yummy !!
My cooking tragedies
The very first time I tried to make bread. . . I baked clever little bricks. They LOOKED like bread. . . very deceiving. . .played with them in the back yard (I was 15. . . the dogs "fetched" them, but even they couldn't eat them.)
