About this Cook
50 something wife with 6 kids and 6 grandkids with one in the oven. I love southern cooking and variations. I usually use recipes as a source and guide for ideas. I usually change them to fit my own taste or ingredients and comment accordingly.
My favorite things to cook
Anything. I like one pot meals and traditionally southern dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Southern cooking is a tradition. I come from generations deep all the way to settlers of Mississippi & Alabama and have fond memories of homecomings and dinners on the ground with all the home cooked favorites that usually including homegrown veggies. I come from places where you understand grits are cooked slow! My favorite southern food is chicken and dumplings. On my dad's side, I was raised in Ft. Walton Beach and my dad grew up in Destin, FL. All of my life I was treated to the best of the best in seafood and love only fresh seafood done southern style.
My cooking triumphs
My fried chicken gets rave reviews every time as does my recipes for chicken wings and chili. All are about as basic as it gets! Some things just need very little help and only need to be cooked right with good ingredients.
My cooking tragedies
Up until I was in my 30s I lacked understanding of why it's important to use whole milk when called for. My chocolate pies always collapsed until one day my mother said, "Are you using 2% milk?" That solved the collapsing problem.

Teriyaki Onion Burgers
I probably used less sauce than the recipe called for and also added some blue cheese crumbles. #Delicious!

Hamburger Soup I
Wonderful and easy! I just used mixed veggies instead of the raw carrots and celery and frozen corn. i did use the onion and pretty much left everything else the same.

Gingered Pork Chops in Orange Juice
This recipe was pretty good actually. Rather than bread the pork chops, I just cooked the onion, then added sherry (since I had no brandy), then the orange juice and I cooked pork chops that were seasoned with all the recipe called for right in the juices. Very good flavor. My husband like it alot!
