I've only been a member of Allrecipes for about a year and a half but have been debating for months whether to become a supporting member or not. I'm on AR everyday and love the characters, the recipes, and the community. Today as I'm sitting at work looking up Beef Brisket recipes (as I got  a KILLER deal at Central Market last night) I reach to grab my third diet coke of the day and realize that I if I simply cut back on the amount of $ I spend on diet coke I could A) afford the outrageous price of $23 for a two year membership (haha) and B) be a  healthier person. So, with that I finished mt diet coke, made a pact with myself to cut back and signed up to be a supporting member.

I feel like I know all of you so well that I thought I'd better tell ya a bit about me. Here goes...

I am a recently divorced single mom to Oliver who is 9 months. I simply adore being a mommy. When I was younger I had big aspirations for medical school and a high powered career. I find it ironic sometimes that I'm much happier folding laundry on the floor of my tiny apartment with a babbling baby.

I love to cook but am a terrible baker (except for bread). Cooking is my "great escape". It relaxes me, helps me think and refocus. I have always loved to cook but didn't begin to really get into it until my marriage began to fall apart, which may explain why it's my "great escape".

I work for Child Protective Services here in lovely Austin Texas where I facilitate the placement of children removed from their homes. It's an incredibly challenging and straining job and one I feel so deserves a salary larger than the minimal social work level pay. I'm hoping to return to school soon and complete my nursing degree and then obtain my midwife license.

I truly love Texas and thank my ex-husband everyday for moving us here. I'm in the process of buying a beautiful 4 bedroom home in Manor, jsut outside of Austin and look forward for the space and the yard and the KITCHEN. I think I'm more excited about the ability to have a large garden.

I have lots of little quirks ( For example, I eat more peanuts, almonds, and cashews than you can possibly imagine) and will most likely talk about Oliver constantly.

I always add red food coloring to my pancakes so that they are pink.

Today is the first day of the res tof your life...

Very nice blog Smurfette. Kudos to your single mommyhood, your job, your soon to be new home, and your aspirations (similar to mine before 2nd kidlet but have postponed them to stay with her). I'm envious that you live in Texas and have a Central Market. I miss Central Market and the pistachio gelato. YUMMY!!! I used to live in the DFW metroplex but moved with husband (Army) to West Virginia. Oh did I say "Hello. My name is Josephine." ??? I'm a stay at home mom of 2 daughters (almost 5 and a 1 year old). I too enjoy and get my frustrations out while making bread by hand. I'm not much of a dessert maker but I'm getting better. Never made pancakes pink but now I think I just might for daughter's sake. Welcome to the Smurf Familia!

Awesome Blog, so glad to *see* you here! I'm a native Dallasite & it's my husband's dream to move to the Hill Country. I've never heard of Manor, going to go look that up. Can't imagine that hard job & being a single mother, but kudos to you! Can't wait to read more!

And, good for you for giving up the diet drinks. My SIL has a friend who is a research scientist on "fake sugars" and has horror stories to tell!!

Welcome! I agree that social work is one of the most underpaid/undervalued professions out there; kudos to you for doing an incredibly difficult job for pay that keeps you just above the national poverty rate!
