Apple Coffee Cake With Brown Sugar Sauce

Reviewed: May 21, 2006
This cake turned out so nicely! We loved the crust on the bottom. I had to use foil to prevent the cake from browning too much after about half an hour, but it wasn't a problem. The colour was beautiful. It ended up taking only about 1 hour until it was ready. I didn't even bother with the sauce after tasting it without. I'll definitely make this one again.

Naan

Reviewed: Jul. 20, 2003
This recipe turned out great in the end, but it took me a while to figure out that laying the dough on the lower grill -- the hotter one -- made the dough puff up and create the air bubbles that makes naan so good. I love that this recipe works on the BBQ. I served it with kebabs and my guests loved it too!

Simple White Cake

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2003
I was a little disappointed with how this recipe turned out because the batter seemed so promising. I used a food processor and the batter was light and fluffy, but the resulting cupcakes, while they looked nice, were a little bland. They weren't as rich as I was expecting. Icing helps, though!

Cranberry Loaf

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2003
This loaf turns out really nicely. The graham cracker crumbs give a nice, not-too-sweet flavour and a beautiful brown finish. It's important to let the loaf cool for 10 minutes after taking it out of the oven in order to let the cake "set", otherwise it tends to fall apart.

Cheese Rosti

Reviewed: Aug. 16, 2002
This dish tastes so good, it's almost illegal! I did the potatoes in the microwave after peeling them -- 3 large at 5 minutes high (I scaled down) and then put them in cold water to cool. I didn't have Swiss cheese so I used mozerella and it turned out divine!

Indian Spiced Rice

Reviewed: May 31, 2002
I really liked this recipe. The dish turned out hearty, but not heavy, spicy, but now overpowering. I used chicken broth instead of just water to give it an even fuller flavour. I think that the next time I make it, I will definitely rince the rice first, to avoid a bit of "gloppiness" due to the starch.

Toasted Oats Cookies

Reviewed: May 21, 2002
These cookies are terrible...because I can't stop eating them! Not too sweet with a big crunch. A great snacking biscuit!

I mixed the chocolate chips into the batter and added cherries...make your own jokes... Definite sugar bombs!

Classic Butter Cookies I

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2002
These cookies turned out really well. I've made them for a gift and can't stop eating them myself! I only stuck the dough in the freezer for about 5 minutes, and although a bit sticky, it rolled out nicely on a lightly-floured surface. Because I didn't have cream of tartar, I substituted 1 tsp. lemon juice after halving the recipe.

Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2002
I used old cheddar for this and found it lacking cheesiness. Also, I was expecting it to be a lot creamier. Really liked it the second day!

Easy Oatmeal Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2002
These muffins turned out light, fluffy, and delicious for me, despite the fact that I put 2tsp of baking SODA in instead!

Aunt Joyce's Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 15, 2001
This recipe turned out wonderfully! At first, I was a little skeptical, because of how much mayonnaise was called for, and because the batter ended up so liquid. But when the cake came out, it was light, fluffy, moist, and very rich.

DeCafe au Lait

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2001
I used to make this drink even before seeing the recipe. Microwaving the milk (use whole milk for a richer treat) makes a nice foam on top after stirring in the coffee. Chocolate powder or shavings on top are a nice addition.

A-Maize-ing Corn Chowder

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2001
I liked this recipe a lot. I added green onions for garnish too, but because I didn't have 2 cans of creamed corn, I used one can, half a can of niblets, and only 1 cup of milk. I didn't halve the other ingredients, and the recipe still turned out. I used 1% milk, but for a richer dish, I'd use cream.

Gramma's Date Squares

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2001
Chopping the dates was the hardest part in this recipe, but it was worth it. The results were very good - rich and not-too-sweet, similar to the ones I enjoy from Starbucks. I translated 3/4 pounds of dates to around 2 cups, and added chopped pecans on top of the crust. Mine didn't hold together all that well, but great eaten with a spoon and a cup of tea.

Green Olive Chicken I

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2001
I thought that the olives in this recipe would make it too salty or tart, but the sweetness of the onion balances it out nicely. I didn't have potatoes so I used baby carrots instead, and mixed a bit of cornstarch and water into the final few minutes of simmering to produce a rich and flavourful broth.
