Rich and Creamy Tomato Basil Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2010
I'm not sure how to rate this because I modified it considerably and it was perfect. I didn't peel or seed the tomatoes, I omitted the butter entirely and added only a few spoons of cream and it was light, and tasted like fresh tomatoes, not cream.

Chicken Piccata

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2010
The chicken was really tender and moist; it was great. I eyeballed the wine, and it was probably closer to 1/2 cup. Next time I will brown the chicken for a longer time to get more color and crisp before adding the liquid. Lemon is a must!

Chicken Pot Pie IX

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2010
My first time making chicken pot pie and it was easy and good. I didn't have celery, and added mushrooms and sugar snap peas but I think this is a basic recipe that can be adjusted based on what you have handy/fresh. I threw in a bay leaf and bullion cube to the water to cook the chicken, and voila! No need to buy additional chicken broth. I live in Hungary, where I can't find canned soups like cream of mushroom, which is why I chose this recipe because everything is from scratch. Like others, I cooked the bottom crust first for about 8 minutes, but the bottom was still kind of soggy: I think it's unavoidable. Still yummy!

My first time making these and I'm happy. They look really pretty and gourmet but they were easy. I'm sure these will become a part of my christmas cookie tradition. Thanks!

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2010
I'm making these now and I'm really happy with the results. I used about 1.5 cups of whole wheat flour and the rest all-purpose, but the rest of the recipe I kept the same. Easy to handle, cookies are keeping their shape, and the one(s) I tasted is yummy. Thanks!

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Sep. 12, 2010
I followed the recipe exactly and the "sauce" was just a goopy, clumpy mess all over the top of the pie - it looks unappetizing. Maybe I cooked the sauce too long but the directions aren't clear regarding time or consistency. I was disappointed :( Next time I will use a different recipe.

Cold Salmon Spread

Lots of compliments on this spread - didn't have dried chives but it still tasted great.

Plum Clafouti

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2010
Quick, easy way to use up an abundance of ripe plums. Used just 1tsp of lemon zest and didn't dust with powdered sugar. Still tasted great - not too sweet. Interesting texture. Will definitely make again, possibly with some different fruit combinations.

Strawberry Tiramisu for Two

Reviewed: Feb. 15, 2010
Tiramisu is my favorite dessert and I loved this variation. It definitely made more than enough for two (but I don't mind!) I accidentally used regular sugar for the filling, but it turned out fine. This was also my first time making my own whipped cream, and it was easy and delicious. I didn't have enough strawberries to make the puree, but it was fine without it. Thanks!

Grandma Jeanette's Amazing German Red Cabbage

This was really tasty but I needed to add more vinegar because it was a bit too bland at first. Thanks!

Curry Beef Stir-Fry

This was okay, and simple to put together, but I wasn't that impressed with the flavor. Probably won't make this again.

Divine Hard-Boiled Eggs

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2010
I don't want to give this a bad rating because apparently this method works for most of you, but I live in Hungary and the eggs here taste and look much different than back home in the states, and this method didn't work for me. I used fresh eggs from the market and after following these steps the yolks were still uncooked in the very middle. I have to leave my eggs in the hot water for 20-25 minutes for the middle of the yolks to be completely cooked. So I guess the cooking time depends on the size and freshness of the eggs.

Boiled Bagels

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2010
I live in a country where I can't get bagels...so I had to try to make these! It was much easier than I expected, although my first batch wasn't as "big" as I'd hoped. I think it takes a few tries until you know when the dough is kneaded enough. I don't have much experience with dough so I may have over kneaded. But they were still great and I made 8 and put most in the freezer (before I ate them all). Next time I'll make them smaller and add some sesame or poppy seeds and maybe a bit more salt. Thanks for the recipe!

Simple Turkey Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2010
This was my first time using turkey in chili and I wasn't disappointed! I didn't have crushed tomatoes but I used a whole box of tomato puree and it was fine, just not as chunky as I usually like. I also added a bit of cinnamon. Thanks!

Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2009
I used this for an expat Thanksgiving dinner in Budapest and it was a hit! I couldn't find pecans but used walnuts on top of half. Made the potato mixture ahead of time and refrigerated - added the crumble mixture just before baking. One friend said I made her grandma's casserole look bad! Thanks for a great, easy recipe that everyone loves!

Nice flavor. Added more broth/water than called for. A bit salty so I may cut back on the ham next time or use more water than broth. Thanks!

Butternut Squash Bisque

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2009
Good base recipe. Next time I think I'll roast the squash in halves rather than cubed - peeling and chopping was tricky. I didn't have cinnamon sticks so I sprinkled the squash with ground cinnamon before roasting. Also added about 1 tsp of fresh grated ginger to the leeks, onions and apples. Used 3.5%milk instead of cream. Didn't use the squash garnish, fine without it! Thanks!

Baked Buffalo Wings

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2009
I followed the directions exactly and they came out perfect and crispy. It was my first time making wings and I was skeptical about the flour coating, but they were delicious. I will definitely make them again. I recently moved to Hungary where it's almost impossible to find decent "bar food" but now I can finally satisfy my cravings! Thanks!
