About this Cook
Born and grown up in Germany, Married to a wonderful canadian, I am living in Canada. 2 small kids (ages 2 and 6) I am a fulltime stay at home Mom. When I have time I love reading, spending time on the computer etc.
My favorite things to cook
German dishes (when I'm homesick), what ever fits into our sometimes hectic life style usually a mix of German Canadian and international recipes. I love making special birthday cakes, I made Caterpillars, FLowerboxes, a Ladybug, a Hovercraft, Rocket from the little Einsteins, a Butterfly and Blue and Magenta from Blues Clues.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The region I am from is called Schwaben and we do have some recipes like Lentils with Spatzle, Maultaschen etc. Maybe one day I'll post them. Sometimes it's a big challenge to do certain recipes since we don't get the same ingredients and it takes me sometimes year to perfect the recipe so it's just like home.
My cooking triumphs
Any dish that pleases my eaters, guests etc. I introduced my canadian husband to lots of variety and international recipes. His tastes in Food changed and he is a much less picky eater. I can't complain about my kids. They even like veggies.
My cooking tragedies
Well once in a while, a dish totally goes down the drain and it usually crushes me. I take a lot of pride in doing a good job and since I'm not working at my chosen job to stay home with the kids, it is really one of the things I am good at, so when it turns out bad it's a big blow to my self esteem. My husband is wonderful since he usually just says: Out of all the hundreds of meals you cooked for me, you maybe ruined 10, so just forget about it. Let's order in. I love him for it even more.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople
Holy Moly - this pie is wonderful. I only had one snag, I made 2 pies and doubled the recipe. When adding the flour to the melted butter, it was not a paste but very liquid, so I added a bit more to make a paste. Then proceeded. I brushed the crust w. egg white before adding the filling, then after putting the top on, I brushed that as well and sprinkled it with sugar. It came out perfectly golden and tasted like heaven. Thank you for sharing - this is a keeper!

Lemon Chicken Strips
my husband and I loved it, the kids were not so sure, but I modified some. I did not have enough lemon juice, so I used half citrus pop. The kids usually like anything with the sauce separate and they don't like to dip, so I think they'll grow to love it in time. The neighbor's kids loved it. So 5 stars from us for a yummi treat.

Kielbasa and Cabbage
I liked it but the rest of the family was not so excited about it. Although I have to add that I grew up in Germany and we had Cabbage once in a while, so I am used to the taste whereas my husband only ever had it in Coleslaw and some boiled cabbage.
