Artichoke Crostini

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2012
Lovely Crostini. I used tomatoes fresh frozen from the Farmers Market this summer which were delish and didn't detract from the flavor/texture at all. I also added fresh finely chopped rosemary & a clove of garlic + salt & pepper (rather than season salt—never touch the stuff). So simple to make.

Loved it. Definitely better if it sits a while.

Vegetarian Tortilla Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2012
Very tasty but calls for a bit much cumin. I think I'll cut that by at least a 3rd next time. It did mellow over the few days I had it in the fridge, but the first serving was a bit YOWZA!

Crispy Zucchini or Pumpkin Blossoms

Reviewed: Sep. 9, 2011
These were simple quite tasty! A couple points: 1. I ran out of batter about 2/3's of the way through, but I was using quite big blossoms, so I just made a bit more! 2. I would rinse the blossoms well in advance of cooking as regardless of the fact that mine appeared dry, there was some dangerous oil spattering from residual water inside the blossoms. // // // I plan on trying this recipe with a little garlic in the batter and perhaps some cheese sprinkled on top. A dip (like bleu cheese dressing) might be a good option as well. Will keep you posted!

Fresh Southern Peach Cobbler

Reviewed: Aug. 13, 2011
[3.5] I'm a little biased by my mom's recipe, but for whatever reason, that doesn't last–not even overnight; so I thought I'd try another. /// This was pretty good. Not great. It was a little too sweet, in fact, it kind-of hid the natural sweetness of the peaches that were in season at the time I made this. And the cinnamon/sugar topping was a bit overwhelming (too much) and didn't caramelize as anticipated—so basically there was a bunch of dry sugar/cinnamon perched on top of the dessert (one of my pet-peeves). /// If I were to make it again, I think I would add less sugar to the peach mixture & make about half of the cinnamon/sugar topping that is sprinkled on top. Better yet, maybe I'll just stick to mom's.

Linguine with Clam Sauce and Baby Portobello Mushrooms

Reviewed: Aug. 10, 2011
I was so excited about this dish. Clams AND Portobello on pasta?!? What's not yummy about that? Well, in my case, it was all the salt. And I *like* salt. I suppose it could have been the clams that I bought from Trader Joe's, but the recipe make so much, I can't justify another go-round to find out. Edible. But definitely not a fave.

Portobello Sandwiches

Reviewed: Jul. 18, 2011
Really tasty. I did not broil at the top of the oven as was suggested, due to other reviewers' references to fire, so it took a little longer. I also added fresh basil to the herb mix. Yum!

Classic Minestrone

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2011
This turned out absolutely delicious, and I am a hard one to please relative to soups. I made some minor changes to the version I created. Revisions: • 2 cloves of fresh garlic, minced added to the end of the saute (It's Italian, right?!? I mean you gotta have some garlic!!) • 2 cups canned tomato sauce & 1 cup water with only 1 qt vegetable stock. • 1-1/2 tsp sugar (to compensate for the bitterness of the fresh tomatoes not being in season). • Substituted garbanzo beans for cannellini. • Used 1 tsp dried thyme in place of fresh. YUMMMMY!

Outrageous Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 15, 2011
[actually a 4.5] These are a delicious, buttery, richer take on a chocolate chip cookie. The flavors don't compete, but are delightfully balanced, with the oatmeal taking a back seat, as you might expect. I've made these twice—and doubled the recipe the last time, at the bidding of my boyfriend, as the original only makes 3 doz. and they were gone in a blink of an eye. Yum.

*Yawn* Way too much effort/mess for a blah cookie. I won't be making it again—box brownies are tastier.

Baingan Bharta (Eggplant Curry)

A bit more time than estimated was expended in the preparation (more like 1.75 hrs). Also, not as tasty/spicy as other versions I have tasted in the past. But nice recipe overall.

[Really 4.5 rated] Simple to make and a really nice rich cake. I think the coffee addition really does the trick. I covered with ganache and raspberries and it was quite the treat! Perfect for the chocoholic in your life!
