Chocolate Intensity

Reviewed: Aug. 8, 2002
I thought this was a pretty decent, if standard, dense torte-like cake. Very rich flavor, and although mine came out a bit dry, I blame myself for overbaking. I didn't try the sauce, but instead served it with ice cream, which helped mediate the richness. The cake was also pretty easy to make, which was a plus.

Cream Cheese Spritz

These are quite nice; extremely mild, delicate flavor with the most wonderful sift texture imaginable. I brushed the tops w/ egg whites and sprinkled colored sugar. Lots of fun.

Blueberry Drop Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2001
After reading the comments, I reduced almond ext to 1/4 tsp, and used 3/4 tsps vanilla. These cookies tasted divine, esp. warm -- like a little bit of heaven, I absolutely cannot rave enough about the taste. They are very difficult to make, though, because you want to make sure each cookie has at least one berry, but the cookies should be small because they spread a lot in the oven. Also, as another commented, they collapse -- when removed from the sheet, some of the bottoms literally dropped out, so I would suggest cooling on a flat surface, or on a rack with a very tight weave.

Mississippi Tea Cakes

Reviewed: May 9, 2001
This is a very simple cookie, but the texture is fantastic -- it literally melts in your mouth. Instead of using 1 tsp vanilla, I used 3/4 tsp vanilla and 1/4 tsp almond extract, which, I think, worked out very well. Overall, a delightfully soft, sweet cookie.

Best Brownies

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2001
These were great -- I baked them by spreading half the batter in the pan, and then spreading a thin layer of raspberry jam on top, and then pouring on the rest of the batter -- it turned out wonderfully!

Cream Cheese Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2001
I added 1/2 tsp nutmeg and chilled 18 hrs. Delightfully easy dough to work with for this beginner baker who _hates_ rolling out dough. Slightly richer taste than most sugar cookies; colored sugar on top made them just sweet enough. Definitely recommend.

Soft Gingerbread Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2001
On the plus side, the puffiness of the cookie was very cute, and the dough is relatively easy to work with (for this beginner cookie-baker). A nice plus is that these cookies seem to be (relatively) low calorie. However, they are not as flavorful as other gingerbread recipes.

Icelandic Pepper Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2001
I had mixed results with this recipe. The dough was extremely sticky, and virtually impossible to roll and shape. It was so soft, in fact, that the cookies spread and lost their shape in the oven, so that small circles became large flat disks. I ended up cooking much of the dough by rolling it into balls and then flattening them with a glass. On the plus side, the flavor was quite unusual and enjoyable; my friends seemed to really like them, at least in part because of the "exotic" flavor.

Spice Bars

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2001
These are absolutely delicious -- I went on a cookie-making binge and tried over 25 different cookie recipes; this one was among my very favorites. Soft, sweet, and unusually flavored. If you like spice/molasses cookies, you will like these.
