I've been making this recipe for years now and my husband begs for it. If you make sure to steam/saute the veggies first, this recipe is wonderful as is - no modifications are necessary in my opinion. Having made it so many times, though, I can tell you that it is a pretty versatile recipe - don't be too afraid to tweak it to ingredients you happen to have around. For instance, I don't usually have a red bell pepper or almonds around, so I just increase the amount of broccoli by 1/2 cup. The change doesn't affect the outcome at all. I also will often make this with a bread dough recipe instead of crescent rolls (which are more expensive.) When we lived overseas and cheese was hard to find I made it with velveeta. Great recipe!
