About this Cook
I am studying to be a psychologist (going for my PhD.) and I live with my boyfriend of 5 years and 2 roommates. I have to cook for 4 adults and have a very tight budget and almost no time, but I LOVE food. I was a vegetarian for 4 years (no longer though)and had to cook my own veggie meals as a teenager. All of that adds up to the fact that I tend to use healthy ingredients to make lots of food quickly and cheaply that are extremely flavorful.
My favorite things to cook
Just about everything! Some of my favorites though are mexican food, cajun food, southern food (raised in oklahoma and virginia), and vegetarian food. My absolute favorite though is soup. Especially chili, potato, chicken corn chowder, chicken noodle, and taco soup.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Both of my grandmothers go all out for the holidays and my grandmother here usually has about 30-40 people for thanksgiving and Christmas. My other grandmother has a huge garden and we always eat fresh veggies there.
My cooking triumphs
I made some really fantastic crab cakes on my first try by mixing a variety of recipes and adding pimentos and my preference of seasonings. It is a favorite of my boyfriend. My first try making shortbread, I added cinnamon and raw sugar on top and that was just fantastic. All of my soups have come out fantastic as well, many I've just sort of thrown together. I also have a great list I refer to on meals that I can make that will feed us for at least three days, taste great, are healthy, and cost under 10 dollars. Thats a triumph for me!
My cooking tragedies
There was one time I attempted to make black bean veggie burgers. I followed the recipe as I was in strange territory and it came out tasting just awful! I threw the whole batch away. Some of my desperate attempts to throw things together that I had on hand didn't go so well, like improvised TVP sloppy joes made with ketchup and cocktail sauce on some leftover frozen sourdough biscuits. Ewwww. When your a starving college student though, desperate times call for desperate measures.
