Heinz® Classic Meatloaf

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2015
Good, although it seemed to have a tendency to fall apart. I think an additional egg and fewer bread crumbs would solve that issue. The sauce is terrific, and the meatloaf itself tasted very good.

Slow Cooker Sweet-and-Sour Pot Roast

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2015
I cooked the roast in a Dutch oven using low (300 F) heat for about two hours. The meat was very tender, although, I think next time, I'll make it without the brown sugar and vinegar.

Baked French Fries I

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2014
I made these last night, and are they ever good. I'lll never buy frozen french fries again. I followed the recipe with the exception of adding some garlic pepper that Winco carries in their bulk section and cayenne pepper as well. The other reviewers are correct about the temperature. Seems like 400 is the optimum. It took about 30 minutes in my convection oven.

Old Fashioned Potato Salad

Reviewed: Mar. 27, 2014
Good, solid, reliable recipe. I usually just throw potato salad together with varying degrees of success. This recipe adds some discipline, and it's good. I did add some extra mayonnaise.

Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2012
I made this last night for dinner along with a ham - it's real comfort food. The only alteration I did was to add some dry mustard and nutmeg. Also chopped the onion up in a food processor per some of the other reviews. Just a thought - if your potatoes have been refrigerated, it might be best to pour half the sauce in when you've layered half of the potatoes. Otherwise, the sauce seems to congeal and sit on top of a completed dish, although it eventually wends its way downward once it's exposed to heat. I ended up with a little extra sauce which I put on some homemade sourdough bread and snacked on. Kind of a cardiologist's nightmare, but, my, it tasted great.

Favorite Corn Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2012
Very good indeed. Didn't have milk, so I used half & half, and added slightly more than a cup for a smooth batter. Also used plain, old melted lard for the shortening and cut the sugar down to one tablespoon and it tasted great.

Mom's Fabulous Chicken Pot Pie with Biscuit Crust

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2011
Very nice, indeed, and a good-looking presentation. I made the mistake of thinking the gravy, or sauce was a bit thin and got it a little too thick, but it still tasted great. Good comfort food. I don't who designed the biscuit package for the "Grands," but, getting that open was the hardest part of making this. Finally resorted to using a knife, and pffft...which was a little exciting for a moment or two.

Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2011
I've made this several times since learning about the recipe. It's a great way to liven up ordinary hamburger meat. I didn't have sherry, and so, I got out the brandy, some of which made it into the recipe.

Curried Cauliflower

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2011
Very good! Even better the next day. I had this for dinner in two sittings along with some salad, and it was GONE. Added a little cayenne as suggested by another reader, and some grated Romano cheese as well.

Fresh Tomato Pasta

Reviewed: Jun. 29, 2011
Really very nice. I used a bit more garlic, two or three cloves, and sliced them lengthwise to boil along with the pasta. Also added some dried rosemary to the water as well. Followed another reviewers advice about sauteing the tomatoes ever so slightly, and it turned out very well. Had it two times last week, and I think it's one of those dishes one never tires of.

Fusion Hummus

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2011
I'd never had nor made hummus before, but, I often use chick peas in soups and stews. This stuff is terrific. Had some last night with some pita bread and it was great. Thanks for the recipe!

Beef and Irish Stout Stew

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2011
Really good, hearty. I have a sense that the addition of the tomato paste might not be critical, so, I'm going to try it without it just like a regular stew.

Banana Banana Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 1, 2010
I don't eat sweet things, but, I had some ripe bananas that needed a home. So, I made the recipe without any modifications, and it turned out looking really attractive, and (according to my neighbors) tasted great!

Garlic Red Potatoes

Reviewed: Aug. 10, 2010
First-rate!! I'd been looking for a good roasted potato recipe for quite a while. I ended up using a lime (out of lemon at the time), and added a little more cheese. Also parboiled the potatoes prior to baking. The dish not only looked great after baking, it tasted terrific.

Chicken Paprikash I

Reviewed: Jan. 19, 2010
I was looking for a different way to cook chicken, and found this recipe. I cook for myself, and often, things taste all right, but not always notable. This is a really good recipe. While making it, I found that the sour cream I had on hand was questionable. So, I substituted a little grated parmesean cheese, and it still came out well. I did follow some of the other reviewer's suggestions of adding garlic, extra paprika, cayenne pepper, and a bit more wine than the recipe calls for. The aroma rising from the cooking process is truly unique, and somehow comforting.

Spanish Rice II

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2009
This is a good recipe for some easy comfort food. I made the mistake of using cooked rice (whoops!), but, it still turned out well. Haven't had Spanish rice in years because I didn't really quite understand how it was made. I'll be making this often now.

Roast Chicken with Rosemary

Good recipe. The end product reminded me of the chicken I had years ago served at the Wienerwald restaurants in Germany.

Slow Cooker Pozole

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2009
This is one of the most satisfying soups I've ever made. I asked a couple of dear hispanic ladies I know at our local farmer's market how they made it, and got a couple of different versions. The result was that I added a some chopped cabbage, corn, and some processed tomatillos. Also took another reader's suggestion and ran the ancho chile with some broth through a food processer & strained it. A little labor intensive, but, well worth the effort. Thanks for a really good recipe.

Easy Pasta Fagioli

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2008
Good recipe. I used rather more chicken broth than tomato sauce & added some oregano as well. Also ran some tomatoes from our local farmer's market through a food processor for the tomato bit. It's one of those dishes that tastes even better after brewing a day or two. A really satisfying soup. Thanks!
