Spinach Potatoes

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2011
This was tasty. When I was pouring the cream on it seemed like it would be too much, but once it baked and set it turned out fine. I used soy bacon to make this vegetarian--if anyone else is going this route, cook the soy bacon separately first to get it nice and crispy, then add it to the onion. This will majorly improve the texture of the finished product.

Butternut Squash Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 21, 2010
I made this exactly as directed (except for subbing veggie stock). The flavor was good but the consistency was a little goopy. If I were to make it again, I would do half cream cheese and half milk.

Fresh Pear Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 21, 2010
This was scrumptious! Stayed moist for two days, and would probably have stayed moist longer except that it all got devoured! I used walnut oil for about 1/2 cup of the total oil for the recipe; this gave the cake a nice extra flavor. Also, I went ahead and used 2 cups of pears. I will definitely make this again and again.

Lemon Artichoke Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2010
This was one of the most delicious soups I have ever tasted, and I have tasted a lot of soups! I substituted homemade vegetable stock to make it vegetarian, and also added about 1/2 cup extra artichoke hearts. I will be making this again and again and again!

Whiskey Marinade

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2010
I'm a vegetarian, but I don't let that keep me from the pleasures of marinating! I let some baby portobello mushrooms sit in this overnight, then sauteed them with about 1/3 cup of the leftover marinade and a bit of oil. I am eating them right now and I seriously think they are the most delicious mushrooms I have ever tasted! The only thing I might do differently next time is omit the salt, since the soy sauce is quite salty already and the extra sodium seems superfluous.

Onion Mustard Buns

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2010
These were AWESOME. I put an egg wash on the top, and they came out shiny, golden, and SO delicious. I used Inglehoffer Stone Ground mustard, and the seeds looked very pretty in the finished rolls. Not to mention the taste!

Leek and Cheese Quiche

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2010
This was a first-rate quiche! I only had one cup of milk, so I just used that and added an extra egg, as I prefer an eggier quiche. It turned out perfect--and very pretty to boot!

Coconut Biscuits

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2010
These were pretty good! I was out of milk so I subbed 3 parts half n' half and one part water. I also added an extra tbsp of sugar. I made them big because I prefer gooey biscuits to crispy ones.

Watercress Soup

Reviewed: May 17, 2010
This was very tasty, easy, and elegant! I made a few alterations due to a somewhat bare pantry. I only had about 1 1/2 cups of milk, so I used some extra stock (vegetable, to make it vegetarian) and about half a cup of sherry. I ate it while watching *Wilde* and found it an aesthetically worthy complement to the movie. :D

Key Lime Rum Cake

Reviewed: May 17, 2010
I made this recipe exactly as is, and was very pleased with the result: a moist, rich, tangy cake that was the perfect ending to a citrus-themed 3-course meal. I served it about 4 hours after taking it out of the oven, and it was just right.

Honey Mustard Tofu

Reviewed: May 17, 2010
This tofu rocks! I have made it like three times this month, srsly. I usually have to add a teaspoon or so of flour to thicken the sauce, but that's no big deal. Also, for those who have difficulty with tofu that falls apart in the sauce: try rolling the tofu in egg, then the wheat flour, then frying them in about an inch of olive or peanut oil. Healthy? Not particularly. Sure to get you crispy, delicious tofu cubes that will weather being drowned in sauce? Definitely.

Deluxe Blackberry Pie

Reviewed: May 17, 2010
This pie was delicious. I didn't have any blackberry brandy but substituted amaretto to good effect. The only problem I had was that the filling was still very liquid after I added the prescribed amount of cornstarch--I ended up adding a great deal more cornstarch, which was somewhat detrimental to the finished pie. In the future I might try tapioca pearls for thickening instead. Overall, though, a great recipe!

Orange Mustard Vinaigrette

Reviewed: May 17, 2010
This was an okay dressing. It was easy to make, but the vinegar completely overpowered the other flavors. I added more oil and mustard, but to little avail. Tasted all right on the salad I served, but I don't know that I'd make it a second time.

Caraway Cheese Ball

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2010
This was an easy, unique, and delicious cheese ball. Very rustic in flavor; if you are ambivalent about caraway, though, this is not for you! The flavor is intense. I think next time I would use a very sweet ruby port instead of the sherry.

Flatlander Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2010
A good recipe. I added more beans and made it vegetarian by using soy crumbles. I also threw in a bit more chili powder and some smoked paprika, to good effect.

J.P.'s Big Daddy Biscuits

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2010
These turned out really tasty! I'll definitely make them again, though I might use just half the sugar next time. Also, in my oven they only needed about 10 minutes, so keep a close eye on them as they are baking.

Rosy Potato Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2008
This was quite good, though I had to make a few alterations. I decided to puree it and it turned out nice and smooth but a bit bland; I added quite a bit more salt, some fresh ground pepper and also some Mrs. Dash. A little extra butter adds to the creaminess. Overall, very tasty.
