These were great! They were incredibly easy to make (perfect for me) and came out a little crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside shortly after cooling. After keeping overnight in an airtight container, they are nice and chewy today (but lost the exterior crisp). I didn't think they were necessarily spicy, next time I might add some more spices to get that effect. But they are yummy, easy and I will make again! I used all butter instead of shortening, baked about 11 minutes and they came out perfect. This is basically the same recipe on the box of Quaker Oats though, which also calls for all butter (no shortening) and omits the cloves (but I am glad I included the cloves).
Also I only had light brown sugar on hand to use, but I think that worked just fine.
