About this Cook
My mother taught me how to cook when I was 10 years old and I have been experimenting ever since. I was a mess cook in the US Navy for awhile cooking for e-6 petty officers in the first class mess. The men loved my cooking and I enjoyed cooking for them. I was a member of a group of a few wonderful people who all were in touch with each other and swapped recipes and other things until one of them got mad at me. It was fun while it lasted and I learnded a lot about cooking with wines from them. I still e-mail a couple of them and share a special friendship.
My favorite things to cook
I cook everything but realy enjoy grilling and smoking outdoors. Either on a charcoal grill or over a wood fire in a pit I made.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving was my personal time to shine. I enjoyed cooking for a group of people, sort of took me back into the Navy. Now I'm older and my kids have gone out west and the family has shrunk so it is not so big anymore. BUT I have since adopted two of my present wifes grandchildren so it is fun once again.
My cooking triumphs
I guess winning three cooking contests would be the bigest triumph. I did write 2 small cookbooks once and sold them through magazines many years ago. I am thinking about doing another now that I am retired and have time, I just need the ambition.
My cooking tragedies
Once when our cat jumped into the oven as I was shutting the door was quite a experience to remember.

Fried Scrapple Sandwiches
First off the scrapple must be about 1/2 inch thick, a 1/4 inch thick sandwich would be like eating a PB and J sandwich with one teaspoon of PB. A little canola oil to fry is just fine as it is low in fat and is actually good for you. Scrapple is a great addition to breakfast when fried till crisp but you need a good scrapple to start with. A good recipe is here but do not use MILK, USE WATER WITH A PINCH OF BEEF OR CHICKEN BULLION IN THE CORN MEAL.

Buttermilk Pie
First attempt at this and it was good but a little too sweet for my tastes. Being diabetic I used splenda instead of sugar, possibly that was it.

Bill's Smoked BBQ Baby Back Ribs
A 15 MIN. SOAK IN APPLE JUICE adds a flavor and moistness, no where near par-boiled!! These are fantastic ribs and I suggest you try it again but according to directions. You may be supericed.
