Cheesy Green Bean Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2006
I used this recipe and mixed it with another recipe and it worked really well. I omitted the Velveeta altogether. The cheddar was enough. I also added 1 lb portabella mushrooms sautéed with shallots in some butter to the mushroom soup mixture. I layered the beans and sauce like the recipe said. It came out really good! So, it was more like a cheesy mushroom/green bean casserole!

Grandma Ople's Apple Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2006
I made this pie twice in 2 days. I made the first one EXACTLY following the recipe, except that I used honey instead of white/brown sugar (a little less than 1 cup). It came out a little odd looking. The syrup which was added on top looked really hard after baking. So, I decided to try the pie before company came, fearing it would be awful. It was actually REALLY good, so I was mad at myself for cutting into it early. Then I made it a second time. This time I used the regular sugar and put 3/4 of the syrup inside the apples, like people have suggested. This pie came out WORSE than the first one. Although a lot of people suggest mixing the syrup w/the apples, I think it completely takes away from the pie, and I would never mix the syrup again. When you add the syrup to just the top, the inside stays just a little tart and juicy. When you add the syrup inside the whole pie is just too sweet and yucky! The thick layer of syrup on top gives a caramel flavored crust, its to die for! DO NOT ADD SYRUP TO THE APPLES!!! Also, use a little less than 1 cup honey instead of the sugar, SOOOOO much tastier!! Oh yes, you have to add cinnamon (2 tsp), that's a must!

Dinah's Stuffed Mushrooms

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2006
These were AMAZING!! I used 30 mushroom caps and used 2 cans of clams and 1 can of crab meat. I used a red bell pepper instead of green. Also, one thing I changed that (I think) made them even better was: I used fresh dill and fresh parsley. The dill was my own addition. These were flavorful, fairly easy to make and everyone was reaching for seconds and thirds! I would put them under the broiler for a few min just to brown the tops. Planning to make these again VERY soon! Oh, and don't use all that butter! You can get away with 1/2 a cup IN the mixture and just cooking spray before going in the oven.

Russian Potato Salad

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2006
I am russian, and I LOVE this salad! My mom actually made this 2 days ago. Instead of the hotdogs either use boiled chicken breasts (my favorite way) or Bologna cut into small pieces. Also add boiled carrots, which you can cook in the same pot as the potatoes. We also add some dill for color and flavor. You can use green onion or regular onion. Cut the potatoes when they are still hot/warm and put the mayo in as you cut them, while they are warm. This makes the salad creamier and better tasting! Enjoy!

Banana Sour Cream Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2006
This came out too sweet. I would use less sugar next time. The cinnamon/sugar on the bottom of the pan is completely unnecessary, will omit next time. The banana bread came out pretty good. I used to have a better recipe, a little more moist, but I lost it. This one is not bad.

Double Layer Pumpkin Cheesecake

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2006
It was VERY easy to make, took about 5 minutes. I increased the baking time to about 1 hour. The family liked it on Thanksgiving, but it wasn't "AWESOME!!", it was "That's pretty good."

Alyson's Broccoli Salad

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2006
This was okay, nothing incredibly special. I let the broccoli sit in the fridge over night to absorb the mayo dressing. The family liked it, but no one raved about it. I would probably not make it again for a large group. Maybe just for myself for dinner.
