Chignik Lagoon Alaska
About this Cook
I live in Chignik Alaska, which is very rural. We don't have a store here. We have to order all our groceries by barge from Seattle and it takes a week to get here so we have to cook very different from most people. I say we because my husband is the real cook in the family. I can cook when I have to and I am the help when he is cooking. We have 2 kids, 5 & 8. They have to eat what we cook so they have eat a lot of things that most kids won't.
My favorite things to cook
A few years ago I lost 100 lbs and I have kept it off so I like to keep things healthy but with a lot of flavor.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up baking cookies every year. We would make so many that they covered all the tables in the house while they were cooling. We would make dozens of cookie plates as gifts and then eat them until we couldn't look at them again for another year.
My cooking triumphs
My husband and I have learned how to cook healthy food in rural Alaska. We have also learned how to cook a lot of ethnic foods that we can't get here but that we love.
My cooking tragedies
I have many.

Pumpkin Brownies
This was so amazing!! I told my husband that I could eat these all day. I used cheese cloth to sqeeze the water out of the pumpkin before I added it which solved the problem of the pumpkin batter being too thin. I also subbed the cloves for orange zest and I didn't add the chips or nuts because I like my brownies without chunks.

Spicy Pear Cookies
They are really good. I didn't have raisins or nuts on hand and I think they would have been good with them. I will make these again.

Whole Wheat Blueberry Pancakes
These were very good. I did have to add more milk but they made fluffy and tasty pancakes.
