Slow Cooker Chicken Parisienne

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2012
Made this for a friend and my boyfriend, both with very different tastes in food. They both loved it, raving with their mouths full etc. I was worried it would taste too 'cream of mushroom soupy'; as my Grandmother would over do the 'cream of' soups in her cooking. But it really turns into a nice creamy sauce. I made it exactly as written and honestly it does not need a thing, except maybe salt and pepper to taste once it hits the plate. I think next time I make it, I will throw extra mushrooms in because I love mushrooms, and maybe a pinch of garlic powder, but it's not bland, even though it sounds seasonless. Try it. =)

Grilled Gorgonzola Flat Irons

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2011
They tasted ok, but a little bit much cinnamon flavor for me. I expected them to have almost a glaze from the brown sugar, but they didn't. The cheese was good on top, but the rub didn't do anything for my boyfriend or I. Not bad, just nothing we raved about. Someone else might like it a lot though! =)

Slow-Cooker Barbecue Ribs

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2011
This recipe isn't specific to whether or not they were country style ribs (boneless) or a whole rack. i used a rack, and I felt like it took forever for the meat to be "fall off the bone" and by the time it got that way, the meat had reduced too much. I don't think this is fault of the recipe so much as I wanted it to taste like restaurant quality. I am not sure you can get rich meaty ribs that fall off the bone without slow smoking them. But anyways, it was good, the sauce was yummy, the meat I had was tender. I just think next time I won't cook them quite as long. Also for any novice rib cookers out there, the white skin on the back of a rack of ribs is very thick and rubbery; inedible even after cooking for hours. Remove it if at all possible, or use country style ribs. =) I also browned the ribs after slow cooking them to give them a bit of bark.

Mushrooms with a Soy Sauce Glaze

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2011
I thought these were really going to have a 'glaze' but they didn't. I made them following the recipe but was pretty disappointed. There really wasn't any soy flavor, and there was no 'glaze' they tasted like regular old fried mushrooms. That being said they were good on steak.

Homemade Crispy Seasoned French Fries

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2011
Thse were just ok to me. The batter made nice texture, but I had to add a lot more seasoning before I really tasted anything. Maybe it's just me, and I like bolder flavors, or maybe I did something wrong. As for the batter and the technique, it's pretty good. To anyone wondering what these are like when they're finished: I would play around with the seasoning, but the batter is exactly like the beer batter they put on fish.

Maple-Mustard Glazed Pork Chops

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2011
These were pretty good. I would give them 3 1/2 stars if I could. My boyfriend thought they were just OK, but don't listen to him, he's not a big fan of mustard. I didn't broil these, because I didn't have a broiling pan. I just pan fried them instead. And since I pan fried them I didn't make a glaze. I doubled the ingredients for the glaze, added a little brown sugar and simmered into a sauce I served on top. Was yummy! The rub was fairly basic, but not bad.

Iced Mocha Fusion Shake

Reviewed: Sep. 30, 2011
This is similar to a recipe I've had for a couple years now. I've found that it tastes best if you use vanilla soy milk for more flavor and french vanilla CREAMER instead of sugar, unless of course your instant coffee is unsweetened, in which case you would need extra sugar. Doing this with the chocolate as some people have done is good. You could also add cookies (Like oreos) to make a coffee, cookies and cream shake. Or you could add ice cream!

Easy Garden Green Beans

Reviewed: Sep. 2, 2011
Made as directed except used minced garlic and apple cider vinegar. Tasted ok, not a ton of flavor though, probably due to the fact I didn't marinate for ten minutes. I feel that wouldn't have made much of a difference, i think part of the problem was not having enough of a marinade. The flavor was good, just not enough of it for me.

Three Pepper Chicken

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2011
I made just a couple of changes to this recipe...I used panko bread crumbs instead of crackers and real eggs instead of egg substitute. Plus I used mostly green peppers since it was all I had on hand, and I omitted onion. (Boyfriend hates onions.) Maybe it was the missing onion, but I didn't think this was that great. The pepper flavor was overwhelming to me, barely even tasted the chicken at all, and the broth/flour sauce stuff that it was sauteed in just didn't taste all that good. i made it as written except for the subtle changes so I'm not sure what was missing...maybe I just don't like bell peppers enough to warrant the excess of flavor in the dish. It wasn't awful just not great.

Honeybee Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2011
Average cookies. Easy to make, and I didn't have too much trouble with them spreading like others did. i did howeve,r have the slightly undercooked texture that one reviewer mentioned. They were ok when warm, and the batter was yummy!;) But once they cooled they were not that great. i can't really put my finger on what was wrong...maybe too gooey? I didn't get as much cinnamon flavor as I would have liked either, they were almost too sweet. (I know, weird thing to say about a cookie.) I think they were over mixed, hence the congealed batter texture. My fiance's daughter helped me and she mixed extra hard, haha. The only things I did differently were using wheat flour, (What I had at the time) and I tried the adding cereal thing (frosted flakes and that didn't work, but since that wasn't part of the original recipe, my review is based on the rest of the cookie.)

Slammin' Salmon

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2011
Haha, ok, this dish was awesome, even though it was a disaster cooking it! I spilled the marinade and had to redo it, and then didn't actually taste this dish, because I had a slight cold when I madeit! But my fiance and his kids loved this so much I HAD to rate it five stars. I omitted the pepper flakes (kids not into spicy food) ad the green onions (didn't have any) other than that I followed the recipe as written. They raved and raved, asked for seconds, and my fiance said it was one of the best ways I cooked salmon. Again, I can't vouch for the flavor's because my nose was stopped up, all I could really taste was lemon and a little brown sugar. My fiance said that the lemon was strong, but not in a bad way. So if you're not into lemon, maybe that would be a good thing to omit. They always say to marinate the salmon no more than 30 minutes but I think it depends...I marinated mine for several hours and my fiance said the flavor went through every bite...and that it was delicious!

Glazed Salmon

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2011
I rated this recipe three stars not because the recipe was bad but just because I didn't particularly care for the molasses flavor. I was eager to experiment with a new way to sweeten up salmon with something other than honey or brown sugar, but neither my boyfriend or I were a big fan of the molasses flavor. Also, a note to other cooks, use fresh lemon zest not what comes in the jar, it's definitely not flavorful enough! This recipe was not bad, and you may like it if you enjoy molasses, but for me personally it needs something a little more. Good idea, and good luck! =)

Caramelized Bacon

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2011
Oh my goodness this is sooo good... I tried this several different ways,I love to experiment in the kitchen, so I tried about eight pieces all different. Four I used brown sugar and four I decided to try dipped in honey. I tried the same things for both the honey and brown sugar: on one piece the cinnamon, on the second piece was mustard powder as another reviewer suggested, third was hot pepper (going for the sweet and spicy idea) and then the fourth was just the sugar/honey, nothing else. The honey bacon was ok but not great, had kind of a burnt flavor, plus it didn't stick/caramelize as well as the brown sugar. The pieces that were plain, and the ones with mustard and with hot pepper were all good, but the cinnamon/brown sugar mixture was by far the best, with the hot pepper coming in second. But you have to make sure you add enough cinnamon, otherwise you won't taste it. You also have to cook the bacon long enough that the sugar starts to caramelize. One final note: I did mine with thick cut bacon. While this was good, it did take a while to cook and didn't get as crispy as I would have liked. I know a lot of people are having trouble getting their bacon to cook, because of the syrup consistency of the sugar...the cooling rack is a good idea as well as using a thinner cut bacon. Just make sure you cook it until dark brown. When you lift the bacon up you'll see strings where the sugar has almost hardened, DELICIOUS!

Broccoli Casserole

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2006
I tried this recipe on my Grandma, but since she has trouble chewing broccoli, I had to cook the broccoli a little longer which made the casserole soft and mushy. But in a good way! It has a surprising flavor and is very good! I also improvised and used saltine crackers on top which work just as well.
