About this Cook
There is nothing better than seeing "yum" on someone's face when they try my cooking! Always, always cook with love or it won't turn out right.
My favorite things to cook
Pasta with homemade tomato sauce and meatballs, roast chicken, squash, fish, brownies, cookies and matzoh ball soup, anything with mushrooms!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family likes to create traditional Lithuanian dishes during the holidays. Stuffed cabbage, potato kugel, dumplings and grated beets with sour cream are some of our favorites.
My cooking triumphs
I have invented several successful recipes such as pasta with diced tomatoes, spinach and shrimp, as well as seared pork roast with rosemary and garlic that is finished in the oven. One of my favorites is baked halibut with a tomato-tarragon compote. I really love to crack open a bottle of wine while cooking and make a big mess in my kitchen! No wonder the dog always wants to stand right underfoot while I am cooking!
My cooking tragedies
One of the worst cooking tragedies was in college when I didn't defrost a frozen chicken enough. The giblets were still frozen inside so I figured I'd just stick it in the oven and pull them out as it cooked. No such luck! Had to toss the whole thing out since the ouside burned and the inside was still frozen solid. Another tragedy was when I tried to roast a duck. I had no idea how to deal with all the fat that came out in the pan and when it overflowed the oven caught fire. The apartment smelled like scorched duck fat for a week! Definitely had to get take-out that night!

Slow Cooker Cranberry Pork
Cool recipe! I'll admit I didn't follow it exactly because I find canned cranberry sauce too sweet. I used a bag of frozen cranberries and no sugar added cranberry juice instead. I didn't have cloves so I used allspice and some garlic powder. The result was a very tender pork roast that came apart like pulled pork. That's what I wanted in terms of texture. In terms of the flavor, mine came out a little bland but most likely because I didn't use as much sugar as the original recipe. If I were to make this again I'd like to pump up the flavor by using red wine, some herbs like rosemary or thyme and maybe brown sugar. Overall it's a very easy and great recipe that can be altered in many wonderful ways. Try it!

Simple Whole Wheat Bread
Can't stop eating this bread! This is a very easy bread recipe. I used quick rise yeast but it still needed 20 mins for the first rise. Only have 2 pans so I cut it down to 24 servings and got two loaves that didn't rise up super high (probably too cool in my house with the a/c on). Instead of bread flour I used all whole wheat flour because I prefer the taste and am trying to use less white flour in my diet. Make sure to use a good quality honey..I used an imported Hungarian wildflower variety. I'm sure orange blossom honey would be really good too. Not too big on sweet bread so I reduced the amount. On the advice of another reviewer I mixed the whole thing in my Kitchen-Aide mixer with the dough hook. The final mix before going into the pans took about 5-10 mins. It would be fun to add oats or ground flax seed just to play with the texture. I think you could also do a rosemary parmesan cheese mix for a nice savory twist, or brown sugar, raisins and cinnamon for a sweet version. Definitely try this recipe..it was a 4 hour project for me but lots of fun because the results are delicious!

Roasted Garlic Cauliflower
Wow! This rocks! I made it with cauliflower and broccoli and used more olive oil than the recipe called for. I also added bread crumbs to the parm cheese and mixed it all in a big bowl. Roasted it in glass dish at 400 for about 45 mins. I covered it with foil for the first 30 mins and then uncovered for the remaining time. It went great with baked flounder and brown rice. I think this recipe would be great with carrots too! Thanks for sharing..so simple and delicious!
