About this Cook
I'm a mid-20's married-no kids girl living in Mid-Missouri. I love to eat, and I love to cook. I try to buy local, fresh, minimally processed foods whenever possible. I love to explore foods from other cultures and really expand my cooking repitoire. However, I will never pass up homemade apple pie and fried chicken, either.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook so much it is really hard to say what is my "favorite." Although, I really enjoy making food that is tasty, beautiful, and at least reasonably healthy. I do not shy away from things like butter, bacon, or cream - I just use them judiciously. I also like to incorporate a lot of color; adds beauty and nutrition.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving is a big cooking time for my family. The smell of sage-spiced onions and celery sauteeing is still one of my very favorite smells. My dad is an excellent cook and is fully responsible for developing my love of cooking. He makes the best Rueben sandwiches around! His cheesecake is also to die for. My goal is to make everything he does, someday.
My cooking triumphs
I make stellar hummus, wonderful casseroles, and yummy quick breads. I have this green chili chicken casserole that I make that no one can get enough of.
My cooking tragedies
Believe it or not, I can not make chocolate chip cookies! They never come out right! I just stick to brownies and cakes; those I can do.

Super Bowl Bites
I was impressed at how these turned out. They were very easy, and quite tasty. Despite many comments, I found that 1lb of meat was sufficient for 24 buns. I used dollar rolls, and a small scooper to portion out the meat, and the ratio was very good. I also found the cooking time needed to be more like 40 minutes. Definitely a good dish for a crowd!

Slow Cooker Carnitas
As written this is a 4 1/2-star. As made, it is a 6 star. I will be making this again, and again. I did as most folks said and doubled the spices, all but the salt, which I only did 1.5 as much. I also substituted fresh garlic (3 heads), pureed with a mortar and pestle, substituted allspice for the cinnamon (allspice is a common Mexican spice), and added a bit of lime juice to it all to make it more of a paste rather than a dry rub. It smelled amazing and tasted even better. I found I didn't need all 10 hours - my roast (4 lb) was done in 8.

Mediterranean Black Olive Bread
Very good recipe. I found the description for the last rising confusing - why upside down on a towel? I just left it in a covered bowl. I added dried thyme and rosemary (1/2 tsp of each) and also lowered cooking temp. Half the loaf is already gone!
