I was born and raised in an Acadian/Scottish household. Food was a big part of our lives. My mother thought it important to teach me to cook at a young age, since she hadn't learned to cook until she got married. I always loved to experiment in the kitchen, too.
My favorite things to cook
Baked ziti, homemade apple pie, coffee cakes, beef and mushroom stroganoff, cabbage rolls, chicken or turkey with stuffing, Traditional Acadian Meat Pie (made with chunks of meat and traditional bannock bread, not ground meat) and the list goes on.
My favorite family cooking traditions
On the weekend, our family would entertain family and friends. My mother always put food out so that people could eat any time they were hungry. We would make homemade pizza, chili, cabbage rolls or chinese food and put out snacks.
At Christmas, we always made Acadian meat pie (which we called Christmas meat pie or Pate). Blood pudding was a staple at Christmas also.
My cooking triumphs
Making my first Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing without the help of my mom. I even improved her stuffing...at least that's my opinion...lol.
My cooking tragedies
I think I'm the only person in history to burn poached eggs. Yes, the egg had black on it, don't ask me how.
