Authentic and Easy Shrimp Curry

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2010
This was delicious. I had to make some minor changes to adjust to what I had on hand. I used an 8 oz can of tomato sauce instead of the tomato and it worked just fine. To get away with only using 1/2 of a lb of shrimp I added some cooked and diced potatoes and some broccoli florets. I just nuked the potatoes in a little water for about 9 mins or so. In the end I added some more spices because I was scared the potatoes would absorb all of the heat. I didn't have curry leaves but the cilantro was great. I added some squeezed lemon. If I ever find curry leaves I will buy them and try this again. I served this over brown rice and some heated up flour tortillas with butter. Mrdrea says 5 stars!!

Lemon Dill Salad Dressing

Reviewed: Apr. 21, 2010
This was a very good dressing. I used half sour cream and added some fresh cracked pepper, salt, and a dash of garlic powder. Make sure to make this in advance because it gets better as it sits in the fridge. Was a great dressing for a salad I served with Hungarian Chicken Paprikash and homemade egg noodles.

Ham Salad II

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2010
This was very good. I had never had ham salad before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I added some green olives and horseradish powder and left out the salt completely. I agree with the other reviewer that this is better the next day. I made sandwiches out of these w/ homemade cheddar onion bread and served spicy oven fries w/ a bbq dipping sauce. Easy fast dinner. Chopped eggs would have been a nice addition but I was too lazy and it was fine without it.

Cabbage Patch Stew

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2010
Didn't have enough time for the crock pot method so I made this on the stove and tripled the water to make up for it. I ended up tripling the cumin also. I browned the meat and veggies (reserving the cabbage) first, then added the liquids and brought to a boil, reduced to low and simmered 30 mins, added the cabbage and simmered another 20 mins or so. I think this would have been better with some additional spices. Great w/homemade cheddar and onion bread.

Serbian Ground Beef, Veggie, and Potato Bake

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2010
I have mixed feelings about this dish. I think it is a great start to a recipe but I feel like there were some things left out. Everything was cooked through and I liked the flavor from the cloves and cinnamon. However, with all of the peeling and chopping involved a few things could be added to make it worth it. I think it would be much better with some sort of gravy and more spices to give it more layers of flavor. I added garlic but it still needed something else. I think a little ginger or curry powder would really add to this dish.

Mom's Coleslaw

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2010
Good and simple I added red bell pepper and parsley for color. I served this for a party along with grilled beef tenderloin sandwiches, scalloped potatoes, pasta salad, and sauteed zukes and corn. Update: made this again. This time I added celery seed and red cabbage. A good base creamy slaw recipe

Tater Tot Casserole I

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2010
This was very easy. I made it for brunch after Easter. As with most egg casserole recipes mine wasn't done after the written cook time. I ended up increasing temp to 375 and cooked about 15 mins more. I also used cooked crumbled bacon that I had made ahead instead of sausage because that is what I had on hand. It worked fine.

Hurry-Up Ham Carbonara

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2010
i thought this was very good and it lived up to the title. great way to use leftover easter ham. i actually reduced the margarine to 1/8 c and didnt feel like it was too greasy at all. i also added some peas. not sure why this got such low ratings. i have made carbonara many times and still thought this was good. it may not be authentic but i think the title implies it isnt supposed to be. maybe some people are just haters

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2010
this was very good. i used hot hungarian paprika for the first time. wow! what a difference it made. this was flavorful and spicy. i used 2 split leg quarters but left the sauce the same amount and added sour cream. if i make this again i would remove the skin off the chix

Cucumber And Yogurt Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2010
i brought this as a side for easter. i made the dressing 2 days in advance to really soften the dried mint. it helped a lot and i would recommend it. i added some dried dill as suggested and used garlic powder instead of fresh garlic (sometimes raw garlic grosses me out). everyone loved it. the yogurt and cukes really helped the dried herbs taste more fresh ones

Vegan Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2010
awesome!!! i doubled this recipe exactly for 2 greased and floured round cake pans. then i baked at 350 for 35 mins. i froze the 2 cakes in their pans on baking sheets(uncovered) for 30 mins. then w/ a butter knife i gently cut around the edges and dumped the cakes upside down on 2 plates. i made a dairy free frosting for my version and it worked perfectly...1/2 c margarine + 2 C powdered sugar + 1 TB vanilla + 2 TB water + 1/4 C cocoa powder + dash salt. all whipped up in my K/A . no one knew it was dairy free. much better than other ones i have used in the past

Mexican-Style Goulash

Reviewed: Apr. 1, 2010
this is a great "clean out your pantry" AND "i don't feel like cooking" type of meal. i found this doing an ingredient search of tomato sauce and ground beef. i added some black olives, taco seasoning, used rotel instead of reg toms, used colored spirals(about 1 1/2 c), and 5 slices american cheese instead of cheddar. it ended up being the perfect amount of heat for us and it was very colorful. seems very kid friendly. i would totally make this again

German Lentil Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2010
i really liked the idea of this. i even used reserved cooking liquid from corned beef and cabbage but it still was a bit lacking in flavor for me. i will try this again but will add more caraway. i cooked mine on high for 5 hours and doubled the liquid amount but i still had to add more liquid halfway through or it would have burned. the veggies and lentils were cooked perfectly though

Easy Apple Coleslaw

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2010
this was easy and yummy. i used celery instead of bell pepper (didnt have any) and really liked the apple/celery combo so i would recommend adding it in. i also used white vinegar instead of lemon juice and it worked fine. after i combined the cut up veggies and fruit i placed the mixture in a strainer to drain the excess water and sprinkled it with some vinegar to prevent the apples from browning. even though i drained some of the excess liquid i should have started it earlier because it was a bit runny for my taste. this was very good with french fries, baked beans, and bbq pulled pork sandwiches.

this was really good. i also love the combo of chocolate and orange. i added more zest and used applesauce instead of butter. no one could tell there was zucchini in it or that it was low fat

Laurie's Shepherd's Pie

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2010
this recipe really came in handy w/ leftovers. i used half of a leftover meatloaf that i shredded w/ a cheese grater, some leftover creamed corn, and found some peas in the back of the freezer. with some additional seasoning and a homemade pie crust i was very happy with the results. i did parbake my crust 15 mins w/ an egg wash but wish i would have parbaked it a little longer because i could taste a hint of raw flour in the crust still.

Pie Crust IV

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2010
i wouldnt say this is a bad recipe because it is very quick and easy but i really think taking the extra time to refrigerate the shortening and the dough after it is made makes a flakier crust and it is easier to roll out.
