About this Cook
I live in Durban, South Africa and have done all my life. It is a beautiful and wonderful place with lots of interesting and different food options (like ostrich and some others that I need to get around to submitting). I am married to the wonderful Dave who likes to try all of my experiments - good or bad. Our first baby, Georgia, was born in August 2010 to accompany the furry babies -3 cats and 2 dogs who couldn't care less what I cook as long as it involves chicken (and maybe cream)!
My favorite things to cook
I love one pot type meals that are quick and easy, but tasty so people can just spoon their dinner out the pot and sit around enjoying themselves with some nice wine. Of course I also love things that let me show off where I can dish up something that looks likes what you get in an expensive restaurant - all depends on the occassion really.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We have a set of family recipes for Christmas dinner that have been passed down for generations which my mom and I use to prepare a wonderful christmas dinner - we cook together to create this amazing meal. My husband was indifferent about christmas till he started spending it with us!
My cooking triumphs
I threw a surprise birthday party for my mom and 60 of her friends last year where I did all the cooking (and cleaning), also the first christmas dinner I cooked when I was about 10 because I said I wanted to and my mom let me.
My cooking tragedies
A rather awful meatloaf with sweet and sour sauce - the recipe came from a book and the picture looked so appetizing. There was nothing I could think of to improve the recipe and neither my husband or I could stomach it to eat it and we had to chuck it out when even the dog wouldn't eat it. We haven't really been able to contemplate meatloaf since.

Corn Dog Bites
Made these as written each time and we love them as a kid friendly lunch. I've also successfully made these in my regular muffin pan and had the recipe produce 18 of that size. After reading the submitter's comments I just slice the the hotdogs into discs.

Caramel Shortbread Squares
Yum! Made these twice now and they are great as written, especially as the caramel layer isn't too sweet.

Best Carrot Cake Ever
I made this recipe as written except I halved it (only 2 of us in this household!) and I baked it in a ring pan so it would be like my favourite coffee shop's carrot cake. And it really was like the coffee shop cake - amazing! This cake is rich and dense and so delicious. It is even better on the second and third day.
