these are great basic chocolate chip cookies. they turned out chewy and soft, and a bit crisp on the outside edges. they are also very attractive - like store bought cookies! use dark brown sugar and they will be just the right color. i like smallish cookies, so i scooped them onto the sheet in rounded 1/2 tablespoons and ended up with about 50 cookies. when you take them out of the oven they look light and too puffy, but once you set them out to cool they settle down into a flatter (but not too flat) shape. trust the recipe times, even if they don't look done, or you'll end up with a hard cookie. the next day they were a little hard, but i put a piece of bread in the container and they softened right up. i'm not sure how long they keep because my boyfriend and i ate them all up in 3 days. :-) but they were definitely good right to the very last!
