About this Cook
I live with my husband on a ranch in northern California. I learned to cook and bake at a young age, under the guidance of my grandmothers. They taught me Southern and Mennonite/German cuisines which I continue to enjoy making.
My favorite things to cook
Simple, basic dishes like grilled chicken or basic casseroles are favorites of ours these days. Cookies and cakes are my creative outlet. I like to send the cookies to work with my husband for him and his coworkers and also to send cookie care packages to young relatives and friends all over the world.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Fixing special dinners for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve. I also bake holiday cookies and make batch after batch of microwave peanut brittle (using recipes found on!) as part of holiday treat platters.
My cooking triumphs
I have learned how to preserve and can using produce from our garden. This year we gave our friends and family homemade goodies for holiday gifts. We gave jars of red sauce, green sauce, grape and strawberry jams and apple butter with honey.
My cooking tragedies
No "tragedies" per se, but one of my favorite quotes says it best: "If we learn from our mistakes, I am getting a fantastic education!" LOL ;)

Alphabet Soup
I have made this delicious soup for decades. The only changes I make are to use canned mixed vegetables instead of frozen, and I often use regular or low-sodium V-8 instead of the spicy as it is what I usually have on hand. Just a few dashes of Tabasco, and soup's on! :)

Cinnamon Coffee Cake II
I have used this recipe or a variation of it for over 20 years, and it has always been a rousing success, as long as I followed the basic recipe. It is a tasty and versatile recipe, so you can easily use the puddings or sugars you have on hand in the pantry. I often add a pinch or two of nutmeg or cardamom, just to add a little punch of flavor and lessen the sweetness a bit. As many other reviewers have suggested, definitely use a cake mix that doesn't contain pudding. Make this coffee cake, folks will thank you for it! :)

Caramel Cups
I made this recipe twice, the first time as written and the second time using a shortbread crust and no frosting. The shortbread crust was much better. I will continue to use the filling, skip the frosting, and use the shortbread crust from now on. I was glad to find the filling recipe.
