I'm a retired teacher and I've moonlighted as a professional caterer for the last 30 years. Now that I have some time I'm interested in writing down what I've learned about cooking and sharing it with others. I'm especially interested in showing people how to improvise in the kitchen and cook without recipes. You can see my web site at http://recipefreecooking.blogspot.com. I also keep a lens at http://www.squidoo.com/recipefreecooking
My favorite things to cook
I really don't have particular favorite things. I like to cook almost anything. My favorite cooking adventure is entering a strange kitchen and cooking a meal with whatever is in the house.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Both the women and the men in my families were strong cooks. Almost none of them used recipes -- all of our family cooking lore is handed down by word of mouth. My grandmother especially hated it when she was asked to write things down. So I learned how she did things by cooking with her. That's the best way!
My cooking triumphs
A decade of catering twice-yearly benefit dinners to support my favorite charity. It's the most satisfying volunteer work I've ever done!
My cooking tragedies
Once I put a turkey with all the fixings in the oven, forgot about it, and set the oven to "Self Clean". It was awful! The kitchen filled with smoke, I couldn't stop the process and the turkey came out a solid carbon brick. It took me a month to get the smell out of the house.
