Cocoa Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: May 6, 2009
This was pretty good. I always seem to have oatmeal, cocoa powder and brown sugar around, and never have chips, nuts etc. So I made them with just cocoa, and took off some of the sugar. I subbed some applesauce for some of the fat, and added a touch of oil so the dough wouldnt be too tough. Baked about 16 minutes and they were pretty tasty. I think hubby thinks they are too much like "health cookies," but I ate them right up!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2009
I did this exactly as written and it had no flavor. I added an egg and extra van ext the second time and it still didnt have flavor. I used oil and a little bit of butter (ran out of butter trying to make this recipe!) and then it was so greasy the sheet of grease and chips flew off the pan into the trash when I took it out of the oven. There is just no substitute for the original Toll House cookies, made in a pan.

Best Spanish Rice

I left out the chicken broth, as we are veggie-heads, and used water and it was still delicious.

Breakfast Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2009
It isnt bad, it just isn't that good! I baked this twice in one day. The first time, followed recipe exactly. Came out with a lumpy dry glob that no way could POUR into any baking dish! It tasted flat, too. And the baking time was waaaaaaay too long. Second time, I used 3 tbs of oil instead of shortening and a dash more milk, increased brown sugar topping to 1/3 cup. That was a lot better. Still reminded me of a cake shaped pancake, with cinnamon topping. But actually went well with coffee and I know all the ingredients in it, unlike the boxed/packaged junk.

Deep Dish Brownies

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2008
As it is written I didnt like them, and I am a choco-freak. I did what others did, omitted an egg, added 1/4 cup more cocoa, less sugar, and I used 1 /3 c of oil, no butter, no baking powder.. Then, they were straight out of Willy Wonka heaven! So, three stars as it is written, and 5 stars doing what most cooks on here suggested.

Crazy Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2008
Just a wonderful recipe. My Gramma used to bake this, she was a teenager in the Depression and had to make do with what she had in the pantry. When she made it years later for us, she taught me how to make it. We did add more cocoa to and a bit less oil. How anyone can mess this up or come out with a "bad" cake is beyond my understanding!

Best Bread Machine Bread

I cant believe it but this is the best bread I have made yet. The loaf touched the window of the machine and was just perfect in taste, texture and height. I am very pleased. Thanks a bunch!

Creamy Rice Pudding

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2008
Well, I am sure the recipe is fine, but I am a yutz. I cannot make rice pudding, stove top, oven, maybe I can buy the right one in the store, but that is about it. I tried twice and both times it was still not creamy enough. I measured ingredients exactly, changed nothing and it still looked like left over Chinese take out rice!! What am I doing wrong?

Dutch Apple Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2008
I used a shortbread crust and a different crumb topping, but the apple-y part from this recipe. Simple, delicious and took no time! This is now part of my family recipe box!

Shortbread Crust

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2008
I easily got two pies out of this recipe, as I used a crumb topping on each. The butter I cut down just slightly, and it was still fantastic. I even made this in a square pan, for shortbread cookie bars. I have heard it said that the simpler the better, and this is so true! Why buy packaged crust or cookies filled with unpronouncable ingredients when you can whip this up in no time?!

Whoopie Pies VI

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2008
They looked nice, but the chocolate part was icky and the edges were hard, and the "marshmallow" stuff was too runny. Probably would have tasted better if I used mud in the cookie dough and Elmers glue for the filling!

Simple Sponge Cake

Reviewed: May 6, 2008
THis is a really simple cake that is perfect for fancy icings or just plain powedered sugar dusting on top. It is very eggy tasting, my family and I love that taste, but we also put vanilla ext in -just 1/2 tsp cuts the egginess and it is equally good like that. You have to love REAL tasting food to like this recipe. If you like "cake mix tasting "cakes, skip this one.

Maple Muffins

These should have been called "Real Ugly Muffins." No one liked them in my house, no maple flavor-and I use real syrup, not Mrs. ButterButt's and I use real butter, not Criso. Still tasted like blaghhhhhhhh.

No Cook Icing

FANTASTIC! I didnt have any cream of tartar so I used salt and it came out fantastically. I had to beat it for about 3 minutes longer but WOW! It was gobbled up with requests for more. (I used it on deep dish brownies.) A keeper!
