Wieners and Beans

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2007
This was a hit! Even with our six-year-old who normally won't eat beans; he gobbled it up and asked for the leftovers for his school lunch the next day! I substituted prepared mustard for dry, but otherwise kept it the same. Yumm!

Cheddar Pear Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 1, 2008
Amazingly good! Very caramel-ly! I was lazy and didn't want to bother with a pie crust, so just made it as a crisp. I even left the peels on. I will make this again and again (a good way to use up too many ripe pears).

Made this with canned lentils (19 oz can) and dried bread crumbs (1/2 cup). Excellent!

Two Tier Strawberry Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 9, 2009
Very nice, and so much better with the grenadine than the jello (I tried it both ways). Probably my new favorite way to enjoy strawberries!

Plum Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 9, 2009
Too lemony for my taste, and way too much crust! The crust was like a nice cookie though.

Rhubarb Strawberry Jam

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2009
Very good, but definitely reduce the sugar. I, too, added some fresh strawberries to the cooking pot, after the rhubarb had been cooking awhile. I doubled the recipe, using 12 cups of rhubarb and 5 cups of sugar and that was plenty sweet. I got twelve one-cup jars (which will be great for gifts) and almost 2 cups leftover for my own fridge. I did process them for 10 minutes.

Grilled Ham Steak Kabobs with Peach Slaw

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2009
Very nice seasoning on the ham; even my five-year-old loved it. I was short on peaches but nectarines made a nice substitution.

Bulgur Wheat with Dried Cranberries

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2009
Way too much boullion; need to reduce it a lot. Probably a teaspoon per cup of water would suffice. Nice with cranberries.

Southwestern Pork Medallions with Cinnamon Couscous and Peach Chutney

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2009
Very nice - spicy! (Too spicy for our kids). I left out the jalepeno in the chutney, and actually used bulgur instead of couscous, which was still very good. The chutney was lovely!

Definitely should reduce the tahini, otherwise very good.

Crispy Marshmallow Balls

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2009
Yum! Always had these at Christmas growing up. They are better made with Mackintosh toffee (3 bars) and it should be 1/2 cup margarine and 1/2 cup condensed milk for that amount. They taste even better straight from the freezer!

Chicken Makhani (Indian Butter Chicken)

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2010
Excellent; very nice flavor. I used half whipping cream, half whole milk. I doubled the butter, and increased the garam masala in the sauce by half. Used chicken breasts cut in small pieces, and finished the sauce in the pan with the chicken. This will be my go-to recipe for butter chicken (it is the best one out of the 3 or 4 I have tried). I made it with just a sprinkle of cayenne so the kids could eat it.

Naan

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2010
Very good. Fried it in a cast iron pan because it was winter, and still excellent. Nice texture, and good with the garlic. The dough was very easy to roll out. Tried it again, grilled on the barbie. Left out the garlic - Amazing! This will be a treat all BBQ season! Had it with Tandoori chicken and corn on the cob - yumm!

Ninety Minute Cinnamon Rolls

Reviewed: Apr. 1, 2010
Ackk! They burned! Oven temp too high, I guess, and maybe in too long (25 min in 9x13 pans). May try again, but definitely bake at 325 and watch closely!

Black Magic Cake

This is the moistest, richest chocolate cake - I can't wait to make it again. Had it with vanilla cream filling/topping (whipping cream, milk, vanilla instant pudding mix), and it was sublime!

California Grilled Veggie Sandwich

Everyone raved over this. Pretty garlicky even with less garlic than called for. Maybe next time I will make the spread earlier and let it sit longer to mellow in the fridge. Very yummy as is, though!

Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting

Very nice and lemony. 5 cups or so of sugar is good (I guess it depends how tightly you pack it into your measuring cup).

High Temperature Eye-of-Round Roast

Reviewed: Aug. 11, 2010
Did 9 min per pound, and left it in oven a lot longer after turning off heat (because I was out), and it still had red "juice" come out when I poked it and was pink on all but the exterior 1 cm around. Hubby really liked it; I prefer a browner look. Rubbed it with s+p and spices before baking.
