I am a full time student and a full-time employee. I work for the wonderful Ford company and plan to eventually get my MSW to become a bereavement counseler for Hospice groups. My mother passed away five years ago when I was 17, and since then I have been trying to perfect my cooking skills. I believe I inherited my mother's cooking skills and living with an Italian who loves to cook really helps too.
My favorite things to cook
Anything in the slow cooker, call it laziness but I love tender, slow cooked food. Anything with garlic is another favorite of mine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Camp Stew is made over the fire during camping trips with all 14 of my Aunts and Uncles (Dad's side only!) and all 43 of my first cousins. It's basically all the left over bacon, ham, hamburger, onions and eggs with ketchup, lots of ketchup.
Also cinnamon fire candy every christmas..
My cooking triumphs
I found a wonderful recipie from Martha Stewart magazine for Pumpkin Spice Cookies with Royal Icing. They use no pumpkin at all, just molasses, cinnamon and lots of butter. They always turn out chewy and soft, and the icing is made by whipping egg whites until it gets stiff, add powdered sugar and lemon juice.
This is a favorite of everyone who tries them.
My cooking tragedies
I once made a hamburger pie, like the ones my mother made. In the process of cooking this at my sister's apartment, I noticed a lever on the stove. I was 14 and curious so I turned the lever only to discover that it was the lock for a self cleaning oven. We were technology illerate so we thought the only way to unlock the oven was to self clean the oven, with the hamburger pie in there too. Luckily we discovered a way to open the oven before it burned and it actually turned out better than my mother's. The extra hour in the oven made it crispy and delicious!
