Spicy Sweet Stovetop Popcorn

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2011
I didn't care for this recipe, even with the recommendations, and an awful waste of ingredients. I don't usually write harsh reviews but this one left me with a ridiculous, inedible mess that is going to be a nightmare to clean. I think there must be an easier way because off the bat, the combination of ingredients sounds really good. My thoughts are that you should probably pop the popcorn in coconut oil alone, and then toss it in a mixture of coconut oil, agave and chipotle pepper. When you consider this recipe process logically, sugar caramelizes and eventually burns when heat is applied. The directions seem to be all wrong, but I have yet to try out the method I suggested...lots of mess to clean up first!

Cioccolata Calda (Hot Chocolate Italian-Style)

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2011
Made this as the recipe states, but with sugar-free soy milk and drizzled with sweetened condensed milk. This hot drink has a rich, comforting taste and is not sweet. Mine came out thicker than your typical hot chocolate, but not as thick as I had imagined...maybe a touch more cornstarch is needed.

Nice, but too sweet; next time I will try and half the sugar.

Tofu and Veggies in Peanut Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2011
Really good and with lots of sauce to spare - just the way I like it! I also pan-fried first in sesame rather than peanut oil because that's what I had on hand. I did not have red peppers but I added chopped red onion, snow beas and broccoli instead.

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread II

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2010
Very good recipe! I made one loaf and only had two bananas, so I substituted with a bit of applesauce (unsweetened). Turned out really well!

Very tasty, but oh so bad for you - there's got to be a better way!

Salmon and Potato Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2010
Very tasty - I basically stuck to the recipe, although for 1 can of red atlantic salmon, I used 2 large potatoes (did not peel them, for added nutrition). That's where the one star is lost; this recipes calls for way too much potato. Also, instead of two big pie crusts, I bought 12 mini tarts, over-filled six, put the other six on top, and baked as directed. Could have done this with 24 tart shells as I had a lot of leftover filling. Finally, I topped with the bechamel sauce from this website. Superb, but so bad for you. Good ol' comfort food I guess.

Black Bean Quesadillas

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2010
Bean coulds use more spices, like others suggested, and it was really messy! I was short on cheese so there might not have been enough to hold it together. Tasty on flax whole grain tortilla!

Tasty, but I definitely added extra spices; cumin, ground coriander, and chili powder.

I also used relish for lack of sweet pickles; simply superb.

Cheesy Quinoa Pilaf with Spinach

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2010
I think I messed ip and used roasted sunflowers seeds rather than raw, which means frying caused them to be double toasted and put the flavour off a bit for me. This is an interesting, definitely gourmet way of cooking quinoa, but a bit bland. I used asiago cheese and topped with sriratcha sauce which really kicked it up a knotch.

Emily's Famous Popcorn

I don't think I've ever had popcorn that's tasted better; drizzled with olive oil, then added topping. Mix well!

Easy Mexican Hot Chocolate

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2010
Like a previous reviewer, I strained my hot chocolate and used homemade chocolate sauce in place of the instant stuff. The only thing I would change is perhaps adding more chili powder? Mine seemed a bit weak on zip.

Chocolate Earl Grey Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2010
Tasted like a less-sweet version of a brownie. Word to the wise - do not overcook! Using the same batter, the second tray of cookies became dry and chalky by adding only an extra minute of cooking. I think 7-7.5 minutes is enough; they will taste better the next day using this time frame.

Easy Avocado Smoothie

Reviewed: Oct. 14, 2010
Simple, easy, and tastes great. This is a good shake idea that incorporates the avocado without unhealthy coconut cream and sweet condensed milk. I put all the ingredients into a plastic jug that you might use to pour drinks from and used an immersion blender - worked like a charm!

Almond Red Tea Custard

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2008
This is a really great variation on custard - the orange zest gives a fresh zing, while the red tea provides a subtle unique flavouring. However, the yield for this recipe is way off - I used tea cups and barely got 4 - definitely not 12 servings! Either way, great dessert!
