Apple Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2013
Came out tasty! I did half white sugar and half brown sugar, and added a teaspoon of vanilla, per folks' suggestions. I have had more delicious apple cakes/breads, but this is very good.

Sarah's Applesauce

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2013
Really tasty and super easy recipe! I used 6 apples of various types, and used 1/4 cup and 1 Tbpsn (instead of 1/4 cup and 2 Tbspn called for) to cut down on sugar a bit. Still came out really sweet - next time I might do just under 1/4 cup. Used less cinnamon so that would be more of a background flavor, and threw in a few sprinkles of ground cloves. Came out sweet and flavorful, smells like pie filling. I kind of want to eat all of it immediately.

Too Much Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2012
Very chocolatey!! I used a a cake mix and pudding mix with different ounces than the recipes calls for - just whatever they had in the store. And I cut the chocolate chips to about 1.5 cups. Cooked 55 minutes in a bundt pan and it came out very moist. Chocolate chips did not sink as some people mentioned, they stayed pretty even throughout the batter. My coworkers said they liked it; I found it to be a little too much chocolate! Well-named, Denise. But if you like things that are very sweet or very chocolately you should definitely go for it. :-)

Scones

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2012
Great recipe! As others noted, I added the liquid a little bit at a time until the dough was moist. I didn't use all the liquid. I divided my dough into two sections, the egg into 2 halves, and then made two kinds of scone. One was cinnamon raisin (I also added vanilla) and one was cranberry orange (I used half orange juice and half milk). Both came out delicious, very moist and tasty!

Mouth-Watering Stuffed Mushrooms

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2011
This was delicious! The only change I made was adding a little bit of onion to the stage w/ frying the garlic and mushrooms, and I used olive oil rather than vegetable oil. Next time I would cut down on the cream cheese and maybe add a little bit of bread crumb. But no one complained; everyone thought they were delicious. Cayenne pepper gave a perfect slight kick, too!

Cranberry Hootycreeks

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2011
I made the jar, and it was super easy and looks great! Only change was I mixed the white and brown sugars to avoid the brown sugar solidifying, per other folks' cookie jar instructions. I also found out a bit late that my friend dislikes pecans, and did some quick pecan/chip swapping! Just made the recipe to try it out, despite already having gifted it, and it was really tasty! Took me a while to mix it enough by hand, but it got there.

Turkey Shepherd's Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2011
Delicious! I used cream of mushroom soup instead of gravy, and no carrots, and added some grated cheese to the top of the casserole. It was really good! I will do this again next year with my Thanksgiving leftovers.

Easy Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Nov. 13, 2011
Solid recipe; I would definitely make this again. I added a little more vanilla than it called for, partially to cancel out the fact that I had to use mostly salted butter when I usually use unsalted for baking. Next time I'll double the recipe - I feel like I could eat all these cookies myself! :-)

Broccoli, Leek, and Potato Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2010
Great recipe! I made several changes just based on what I had in the house. I didn't use celery, broccoli, fennel seed, or most of the ingredients of herbes de Provence. I used 1% instead of whole milk and 1 cup chicken stock and 2 cups veggie stock. I also threw in some garlic (toward the end, whoops). Finally, I did not blend this because I tried it before and it was already delicious! I definitely recommend this recipe, it was easy and tastes great. Perfect for this cold weather!

Roasted Kohlrabi

Reviewed: Sep. 27, 2010
Same as other folks, I got this in my CSA share and had to figure out what to do with it. I pretty much followed this recipe exactly (except I think I used more olive oil; I just kept adding more when I ran out of it). It tastes a lot like broccoli, and I think the Parmesan cheese added a lot. I would make this recipe again!

Kielbasa Kale Stew

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2010
I made 2 cups of chicken broth and put in 2 cups of water with my (fewer) potatoes, then after I mashed the potatoes I mixed in the broth. I fried onions in olive oil in another pan and then added them with the chicken stock, as well as a clove of garlic. I let that simmer for a while then added the kielbasa, kale, and spices: black pepper, cayenne pepper, and thyme. It was a bit salty with the broth and kielbasa, but still delicious. I would definitely make this again!

Collard Greens and Beans

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2010
So, I only loosely followed this recipe, but my easier version was delicious. I fried 3 slices of bacon, then added about half an onion and couple cloves of garlic, then the bacon again and about a cup (ish - 4 or 5 big leaves) of collard greens. Then I threw in a dash of white vinegar, maybe 1.5 tbspns of brown sguar, and a couple sprinkles of red pepper flakes. I covered it with water and let it cook uncovered on medium low for maybe 20 minutes. It was SO DELICIOUS. Bacon grease and brown sugar = hard to go wrong!

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2010
Great recipe. I did it exactly as indicated here. I was worried it would be too sweet with all the sugar, but I think it was perfect - the cream cheese part was sweeter than the pumpkin batter so it balanced out well. These are a huge hit with my coworkers!

Alienated Blueberry Muffins

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2010
Very tasty! I gave this recipe 4 stars because I made changes, so not sure how it would have been if I followed the recipe exactly. I cut the sugar to 1 cup, almost doubled the vanilla, sprinkled in some cinnamon, and threw in a dollop of sour cream. Also, I used frozen blueberries because that was what I had on hand. They were on the most amazing muffins I have had ever, but they were good. I would make them again.

Quick and Easy Stuffed Peppers

Reviewed: Mar. 7, 2008
This recipe was really good, although it needed more spices. I changed some things but I think I kept the recipe essentially the same. First, I used regular rice and so I started cooking it on the stove a bit before I added in the tomatoes. I didn't use a microwave at all, but instead heated the peppers in the oven. I also added a little bit of garlic, black pepper, and cayenne pepper to the rice mix. This recipe was really really easy to make yet tasty... I am definitely going to make it in the future for company as a main dish. It's really hearty because of the beans, too!

Cinnamon Rolls I

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2008
Pretty good. I followed the recipe except for the butter/sugar/cinnamon part - I just eyeballed that, but in hindsight I should have probably gone with the actual quantities, because my cinnamon rolls were not as sweet as I'd have liked. I liked how this recipe is really easy, and the making rolls from the dough is so simple. I did the 45 minute rising verison instead of overnight in the fridge. I'd make this again but follow the quantities for cinnamon and sugar and also perhaps do a frosting.

Lemon Green Beans with Walnuts

Reviewed: Aug. 24, 2007
Pretty tasty. I used almonds instead of walnuts because that was what I had, but I think it went with the recipe better than walnuts would have. I just guessed at all the quantities based on the amount of green beans I had (it was less than a pound) and it still came out tasty.

Amish White Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 2, 2007
Great bread. It was definitely sweet, but in a way that I would still eat with a sandwhich or meal. I used a little bit less sugar, but not a measured amount less, I just didn't fill the measuring cup quite all the way up. I used all purpose flour because I didn't have any bread flour. It was definitely pretty easy to make. I made bread one other time before this, but this bread came out really well. Kneading took less time than I expected and all in all it was easy to do this whole process after work, eating dinner while the dough rose and then baking after I had finished eating. I made the bread a second time, and this time I substituted olive oil for vegetable oil, then added in chopped kalamata olives and rosemary when I was kneading. I made 2 rolls and a loaf (from a halved recipe), and it was very very good.

Shortbread Cookies II

Delicious cookies. Taste just like other good shortbread I've had. I'd definitely make this again, and I'll probably serve it to guests with tea or just as an easy-to-make dessert.
