Chinese Napa Cabbage Salad

Reviewed: Sep. 28, 2013
Made this exactly as written (increased to make 5 times the servings) for a party. I did add a little finely chopped carrot and green pepper, added only for a little extra color. I also added just a little bit of Chinese hot mustard to the dressing(whisked in with some of the vinegar first, to blend the mustard). I was so pleased with the flavor!!! We like to mix it a little ahead of time, so that the noodles actually soak up some of the dressing and take-on more of a noodle texture, instead of a crunchy texture and the cabbage softens more and wilts. Really, I like it both ways - crunchy and soft! Added the rest of the dressing close to serving time. Thanks for sharing - this one's a keeper!!

Best Cream Of Broccoli Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2012
I made this soup exactly as the directions indicated, precisely measuring all ingredients. The soup just wasn't thick enough. Actually, it was really thin. I had to thicken it. The flavor, prior to thickening more, was pretty good. It's a little bland - seemed like it needed salt for some reason and I did NOT use sodium free broth. I think this is a good recipe and it just needs tweaked. I'll play with this next time and see how it turns out. Thanks for sharing.

Baked Kale Chips

I usually don't give a bad review, but all I can say is I will never make these again. I like Kale, but didn't like these at all. Sorry.

Daddy's 'If They'da had This at the Alamo we would'ha WON!' Texas Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2011
A big "THANK YOU" to your daddy! We loved it! Next time I will buy better cuts of stew beef from a local butcher. (I wasn't pleased with the stew beef I purchased.) I think I'll play with the recipe by adding different types of peppers to it as well, but as written it was very good! Personal family preference dictates that I add the bacon in this household! Thank so much for sharing.

Creme Brulee Cheesecake Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2010
These are pretty good. I think if I make these again, I'll use a different crust. The crust is pretty "chewy" and a little tough. Also, the toffee bits become a little watery after refrigeration. (I used HEATH toffee bits.) These set up fairly firm, but I'd prefer them a little more firm. (Easily fixed.) Overall, my family really loves them, but I'm the one who would like to make the above changes.

Ribboned Fudge Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2010
Very Good! I'll admit, at the suggestion of another review, I added 2 T. of cocoa powder to the cake mix and substituted room temperature strong coffee in place of the water called for on the cake box instructions. Great chocolate flavor with these substitutions. I'm sure the cake is very good without the substitutions, but my family prefers "really chocolatey" taste. The cream cheese mixture cooked beautifully and has a creamy taste and light texture. It formed a gorgeous ribbon in the cake. I used the "satiny chocolate glaze" recipe on this site for the glaze. Make extra! You can drizzle it on each slice when you serve it. The cake tastes wonderful with that little extra touch. I will most definitely make this again. Thank you for sharing.

Creamy Vanilla Pudding

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2010
Good flavor, but a little sweet. I would cut back a little on the sugar next time. Also, it didn't get quite as thick as I would prefer, so I may consider increasing the cornstarch by 1/2 -3/4 tsp. For the most part, it does taste pretty good and is such a treat! Thank you for sharing.

Poke Cake II

I made this exactly as the recipe directed and my family was pleased. The cake was moist and fruity. I used raspberry jello. Easy to make, light and refreshing. I will make this again. Thanks from my family to yours.

Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff

Reviewed: May 18, 2010
I thought this was ok, but my boyfriend really liked it. I prepared it exactly as written in order to be fair with my review. I think next time, I'll look into cooking the chicken a little differently. I thought it was a little tough. The sauce needs something to suit my taste. I'm not sure what. Maybe a little dry mustard to give it a little more of a zing? I thought it was a little bland. Don't get me wrong, this was good, but not one of my favorites. Everyone's taste is different. You might consider doubling the sauce as well for it didn't make a lot. Thank you for sharing.

Pastry for Double Pie-Crust

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2010
Just like mom makes! The only thing I did differently was to add one extra tablespoon of water. The dough was great to work with. I made a blueberry pie for Easter and everyone loved it. For all the "newer" cooks out there, this is a great recipe to learn to make pies. This is the crust I grew up with. Thanks for sharing.

Bon Bon Christmas Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2008
These cookies aren't what I'd consider to be one of my favorites. The dough mixes quite dry and needs those couple teaspoons of water the author mentions. The dough has very little, to no flavor and I even added almond extract and vanilla. Very disappointing. They also cook a little doughy and I even increased baking time and drained the cherries well, then dried them on paper towels. Most likely I will not be making these again. Sorry.

Delicious Dog Treats

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2008
Great dog treat recipe. Easy to work with. I posted a photo, but it hasn't been approved yet. I cut the treats with Christmas cookie cutters. I think next ime I'll make them a little thicker and just bake them a little longer. I baked these 30 minutes. That was the perfect time. They are a gift for a friend's dogs. They're cute lil' treats. Thanks for posting the recipe and Merry Christmas!

Ravioli Dolci (Sweet Ravioli)

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2008
Very good tasting cookie. Kind of shortbread like. The dough is difficult to work with, but I found that by rolling it out between the wax paper and then putting it in the freezer, the squares were much easier to work with. I filled mine with blackberry preserves and dusted them with powdered sugar. Others I filed with the cream cheese filling from the bakery and then drizzled those finished squares with chocolate. Very pretty and will be enjoyed by all. I will say that you only get about half of the amount the recipe is supposed to yield and I didn't make them huge. I'll make these again, only this time I know what I'm getting into. Merry Christmas and thank you for sharing this recipe.

Thick Cut-Outs

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2008
Really very good, but still not the cut-out cookie I'm looking for. I found out as the process went on that rolling the dough thicker, makes for a softer and better cookie. I cooked them 8 minutes as many reviews recommended. I also added almond extract to the mixture prior to adding the flour. For icing I made a family favorite of butter Crisco shortening, confectioners sugar, vanilla and almond extract. I think I will make these again and "tweak" them a bit to see if I can get them just a little softer. If I can, then these will be the perfect cut out cookies in my opinion. By the way, the dough is really easy to work with! I really appreciated that. I'm sure my family and friends will enjoy these cookies over the holiday. Merry Christmas and thank you for sharing your recipe.

Cake Balls

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2008
I'm giving a 5* rating based on chocolate cake mixed with chocolate frosting and then dipped in chocolate/peanut butter. OHHHH MYYYYY GOSSSHHH !!! They are delicious. Very time consuming, but so good. I also tried strawberry cake mixed with cream cheese frosting and then dipped in white chocolate and some dipped in semi sweet Ghiradelli chocolate. Those dipped in the Ghiradelli chocolate taste like chocolate covered strawberries. (A little too much strawberry taste for me, but that's just my taste.) Make sure to freeze the cake mixture first and the dough will be easy to work with. Thank you very much fro sharing this recipe. I'll make them again, I'm sure. Merry Christmas!

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2008
Very Good! My family really enjoyed it. Once it chills in the refrigerator, it gets much thicker. It kind of reminds me of a cheesecake dessert, rather than cheesecake itself. I would think you could add more cream cheese and extra eggs if you wanted more of a cheesecake texture. On the other hand, I would think adding more pumpkin would give it more of a pie texture. This recipe could be changed to fit whatever taste you are looking for. *** I will make this recipe again and may try some modifications to change the texture in different ways. Thank you for sharing.

Mammaw's Waffles

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2008
This is a pretty good little waffle recipe. I was happy with the consistency and taste and only made a couple modifications. I added 2T. of sugar and a 1t. vanilla. Our family likes a little sweeter waffle. Preparation was fairly simple. I would recommend and share this recipe.
