The quest for Yum

Im not a world class cook or baker by any means, but there are times when you feel so motivated to do something right... something really fantastic... that you will go through several failures in the process.

I grew up in a very small town in Iowa. It was so small in fact, that every day the school lunches were made from scratch. All of it. About twice a month, the students would be in an especially good lunch mood. It was cinnamon roll day. There was a remarkable lady in the community who would come in way before the day started, just to get those cinnamon rolls going... from scratch.  As remarkable as this sounds, what was truly amazing was that each one of her cinnamon rolls was perfect. They all had the same number of "swirls". The cinnamon on the very center part, was just moist enough... you saved it for the very last bite.  The school kids weren't the only ones who knew of her awesome cinnamon roll powers. This lady volunteered (yes volunteer) to make them for church events, and local festivals. She did it all on her own.  When she died, by father asked her daughter if the recipe was passed on to her. The daughter, smiling, said it died with her mom. We will never know. Maybe the powers of the cinnamon roll lady did die, but I was going to see if I could come close.

I've tried so many cinnamon roll recipes. I had hard rolls. Yuck. Ones with raisins, nuts, some made with powdered sugar, some with butterscotch pudding. But I always felt defeated. My rolls never had that light delicious taste. They didn't unwind properly! As I had always dreamed.  They didnt meet my goal.

Today I tried a recipe from the website and I think I'm getting so much closer!  They were really yummy, but alas, were NOT all uniformly shaped. Ha. I know... practice makes perfect right? I will try again, and possibly with the same recipe. But if there's one thing I did learn today in my quest for the yummy cinnamon roll... do not make them in the afternoon. Or that's what will be served for dinner that night. :)

A SWEET BLOG. i can feel the admiration for her coming thru in your blog. my wife taught for 23 years. they got stuff shipped in b but every blue moon they would make home-made cinnamon rolls. i could tell when they did. her personal record was 6 in a day. yeah, she bribed the baker :). once you get your recipe down, maybe you can be the cinamon girl gal at a school of your choosing. just remember to write down that recipe and pass it along!

My mom would make cinnamon rolls every few months when I was a kid. I would always help put the cinnamon and sugar on, some times she would make a sticky glaze to put over the top. I can't eat too many sweets now days, (every 2 or more years I may get one from Cinnabuns (They are over rated), but still good.

I am on the same quest... with a different motivation. The best cinnamon bun I have EVER had was from a cafe in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Tried to recreate it to no avail... but I recently found this recipe which I have yet to try. Maybe you can give it a shot and if it is great, let us know!

About Me
I cook when Im bored, but whe never I cook or bake I really want to impress myself and others. I love trying new things and working with different ingredients.
My favorite things to cook
Italian foods are my favorite! I especially love Chicken Parmesan. Yes, I know it's not a difficult meal, but mmmmm!
My cooking triumphs
Pumpkin pie made with a real pumpkin! Actually the triumph was not chopping off a finger when I cut open that tiny and very hard little pumpkin!
My cooking tragedies
ALWAYS read the entire recipe prior to beginning! I once made a meatloaf that had a sauce over the top. But when I began mixing the ingredients into the meat, I mixed in the ingredients to the sauce. YUCK. Even my husband had a hard time choking down a bite.
