My favorite things to cook
I like to try new and different things. My husband is less willing, so I have to compromise my adventurous taste with this "I'm not so sure about that" taste.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family cooking traditions are based on flavor more than being healthy. I like to find a way to combine the two. I live in the south, and a lot of our traditional family foods are casseroles and/or usually include "cream of"s. And when all else fails, take what you've got on hand and combine it all in a big pot. That... doesn't always work.
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I follow a recipe, it usually works out. My mother-in-law loves to cook, and whenever I have a question about a substitution or what exactly that mystery ingredient is, she can usually help me out. Every cook should have a secret weapon. She's mine.
My cooking tragedies
Trying that "when all else fails" idea I mentioned. Some flavors were never meant to be introduced, much less combined. Trust me.

German Lentil Soup
I can't imagine anything I did wrong, because I'm certain I followed the recipe nearly exactly. It could just be a difference in taste and that this is a flavor I personally dislike. :-(

Italian Style Winter Soup
My husband and I were absolutely amazed when we made this recipe. I had intended to follow it exactly, but we're not big garlic fans, and we love onions, so I made a few small changes. I only put in a clove and a half of garlic, and I upped the onion to about 1 cup (half a medium onion). I didn't quite have 8 cups of chicken stock, but I used what I had (probably about 6 or 6.5 cups). We also like a lot of meat, so I believe we put 6 links of sausage instead of 4. It was more like a stew than a soup, but we liked it that way. I can't wait to make this again, and next time I plan to double it and share with relatives! Thanks for sharing!

Polish Sausage Soup
This seemed to be the kind of soup that improved with time. Being only my husband and me, we had leftovers for a couple of days, and as time passed the flavor increased. I cut up the carrots and the potatos to bite size, and sauteed the onions and half of the sausage before adding to the pot. Also, I had intended to use chicken broth instead of water, but forgot. I found myself wishing I had. Though the soup was still okay, the water seemed to tone down the flavor a lot, so next time we will probably try broth, and sautee all of the sausage and onion first. Can't wait to try it again!
