My favorite things to cook
Meatloaf! I found a great recipe on this site, and with a few tweaks here and there, it has really become a favorite. I think it has something to do with how all the different smells come together very well in the beginning, with all the chopping and mixing. Then the flavors really open up when the loaf is in the oven. The all-american childhood meal.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I remember visiting my maternal grandmother who lives in Malaysia. She was still waking up at 4:30 in the morning to sell pastries and other sweets to people on their way to work. I remember picking this one particular flower for the blue dye necessary for a particular rice cake that is eaten with a wonderful coconut spread. I will never forget the way it smells.
My cooking triumphs
I make the best ginger cookies. Utterly divine. I did not care at all for ginger prior to playing with the idea. I've since then gone out of my way to find some wonderful ways to incorporate ginger into everyday things for a little kick!
My cooking tragedies
I tried to make caramels once. I got..... something that was hard enough to not be syrup..... Actually, it wasn't that bad. It was *almost* there. But that's like almost winning an olympic gold in the 100 meter dash.
