Hamantashen II

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2009
I just made these for my Mishloach Manot (gifts for Purim) and they came out wonderfuly! The pastry was crispy and delicious. I added a cheese filling that I made up, which actulaay went very well. You just need to be careful to pinch them closed properly so they don't come open.

Popovers

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2009
Popovers are not a South African or a Jewish food so I've never eaten one before. But I saw the resipe and picture and they looked delicious. These were fabulous! I also shortened the 2nd cooking time a bit, to 15 minutes. The only complaint I have with these is that they're best served hot, so no yummy leftovers!

Grandmother's Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2009
Whenever I take these to a function, I HAVE to take a few copies of the recipe with. I usually give this to the bride at kitchen teas too. I usually leave out the raisins or substitute with cranberries, but either way, this one is a winner!

Oatmeal Shortbread

Reviewed: Sep. 28, 2009
On some of the other reviewers advice I added some vanilla. I really likes the chewy texture. A little bit oily, so maybe a touch less than a cup of butter next time.

Basic Flaky Pie Crust

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2009
I made this for a tuna/green-bean and a butternut/feta pie, and it turned out brilliantly. Next time I'll use the tip to roll it out between two sheets of baking paper

Onion Bread I

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2009
Made this for the first time today and it was wonderful! I used water instead of milk to make it non-dairy, and it was still perfect. Garnished with chopped onion before I baked it. My dad couldn't believe I made it!

Lemon Bars I

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2009
I found that I needed to bake this for longer than specified, about 30 minutes. The filling was delicious, although I think I might add an extra tbs of lemon juice next time. Lovely recipe!

I live on my won so I'll often make a batch of these on Sunday morning and freeze the individual pieces for breakfast during the week

Basic Corn Muffins

Reviewed: Jun. 20, 2011
I just made these for the first time. We don't really do corm muffins in South Africa (surprising, since white maize meal is the staple food). I halved it but used a whole egg as suggested by one reviewer. I dressed them up with cherry tomatoes, spring onions and a garlic-and-herb seasoning. To make it savoury I would decreased the amount of sugar next time. But otherwise they came out light, moist and delicious!
