This was my first time making clam chowder, and as many have before, I loved this recipe! Although I personally wanted to try the bacon version that was recommended by others, I was making this for someone who doesn't eat pork and is trying to lose weight, therefore I altered the recipe slightly, following the advice of another reviewer: sweated off the onion in a little olive oil before adding the other veggies, used all clam juice instead of water, reduced butter and flour to 1/2 cup each, and used fat-free half and half. It was delicious and just the right thickness for our taste. Great recipe!
