Black Bean Hummus

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2012
This was great! I doubled the spices and garlic, and I cooked the beans for 20 mins. the 2nd time I made it. Definitely better cooked b/c it eliminated the hard pieces.

Sturdy Whipped Cream Frosting

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2012
Used this for Irish Whiskey Cakes in a jar. I followed the advice of others to whip the cream cheese separate from the heavy cream and then combine the two. Left the cream in the freezer for 30 mins. and didn't bother with cold bowls or beaters. Perfect! Tasted like whip cream to me with a slight cream cheese flavor. It did not break down and was fine as a icing topping for the jarred cakes.

Tiramisu II

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2012
Excellent recipe. Taking tips from others: definitely double the coffee mix, combine the yolk mix and milk mix together, dip the cookies for a couple seconds on the no sugar/flat side and then place in your dish with the flat side up so the liquid will go through the whole cookie. Changes I made: sprinkle powdered sugar in between layers. I also made sure that I LIKED the way the coffee mix tasted. I didn't want anything bitter so I added Kahlua, sugar and Godiva White Choc liquor. The last change I made was to add a layer of chocolate and coffee buttercream to the top. I know this is not a common thing to do, but it sent this dessert over the top. Made it the night before and iced it right before serving.

Playgroup Granola Bars

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2012
I took advice from others and reduced the sugar a little and changed the oil to canola. I used a full cup of dried fruit: cranberries, golden & reg raisins, apples, apricots, papaya, pineapple, dates. I also added 1/4 cup of unsalted pumpkin seeds. After mixing everything it seemed a little dry so I added another 4 tbls. of honey and the same amount of water. My mix was sticky and the bars held together pretty well when cut. I would add even more next time. Also increased the cinnamon to 1 tsp. and added 1/2 tsp. of pumpkin pie spice. Reduced cooking time to 22 mins. My only complaint is that this recipe turns out a cake/brownie like bar. I was expecting something more crunchy. Personal pref. My husband loved them and I'm pretty sure he's gonna want them pretty often. Tasted great while warm out of the oven with butter!

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2012
Lots of reviews complain about the amount of salt and/or sugar. I had to add more salt and more garlic and it still was very bland. I did use Italian turkey sausage and ground turkey, however, I've made lasagna in the past using turkey and jar sauce (spiced up) and not had a flavor problem. I thought using this recipe would make my lasagna more flavorful, and it just didn't happen. I'll stick with using an already flavorful jar sauce and adding spices to it to get the proper balance. Definitely not worth the time.

Homemade Tomato Sauce I

Reviewed: Jul. 12, 2011
Very good. I made the following changes: only added 1 tbsp tomato paste-- used merlot-- added 8 or so stems of thyme-- used 20 roma tomatoes-- cooked for 4 hours-- added 1 tsp seasoned salt-- after cutting up the tomatoes, I pureed them using a hand blender with the carrots, onions & bellpeppers-- after cooking and removing bay leaves (3), thyme stems and celery, I then used the hand blender again to make the sauce completely smooth-- My sauce was lighter in color than most of the pics here. Looks more like vodka sauce. Next time I may skip the carrots and bellpeppers.

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

Great recipe! I didn't have onion powder so I put some onion flakes in water and then drained them. Still tasted great.

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2010
Very good. I used ground turkey and turkey sausage. Reduced the chili powder by half (hubbs doesn't like too spicy), but I did add a couple of packets of chili seasoning and increased the beer. I kept everything else the same.

Emily's Famous Popcorn

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2009
I had to make this twice. Both times I ended up with brown bits (burnt butter I assume) on my popcorn. The second batch was better b/c I left out the salt. I added powdered cheese and garlic powder. Very tasty even with the brown bits.

Brown Sugar Smokies

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2008
I won a holiday party contest for best dish with this recipe. I did the following: cut regular bacon in half and trimmed the fat, dredged bacon in brown sugar, wrapped them and let them marinate overnight in ziplock bags, didn't bother with toothpicks b/c they held together on their own, placed them 1/4" apart on foil lined baking tray in rows, baked for 20 minutes each side, used a turkey baster to suck the fat up from the tray in between flipping. I also didn't bother with the skewers or crock pot. Be careful not to burn these b/c of the sugar. Broiling for a couple minutes after cooking seemed to almost burn them and isn't really necessary. Also, the dipping sauce people recommended made with mayo and chili sauce tasted weird to me. I didn't like it and no one ate it. I used 3 lbs. (packages) of bacon for 3 packs of sausages.

Suzy's Mashed Red Potatoes

This was very bland. I even added extra everything. Just tasted like potatoes with nothing on them. Good base but seems to be missing something...somethings.

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2008
Good recipe. I added Italian herb seasoning mix, garlic powder and onion powder. I also used my Kitchenaid mixer to mix the dough. I used the beater first to combine all the ingredients and most of the flour, and then used the dough hook and added the remaining flour until a ball formed on the hook. Only took a total of 5 minutes mixing time on setting 2.

Buttercream Icing

Reviewed: Sep. 27, 2008
Great base recipe. I've been playing with this one for over a year. I now use only whipped butter and less shortening than the recipe calls for. I also add more milk and 1 tablespoon of butter flavor. To make chocolate buttercream add 3-4 tablespoons of coco powder.

Sloppy Joes II

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2008
I used ground turkey and added a packet of McCormick dry sloppy joe seasoning. It needed extra flavor in my opinion. Great base though. No need for the can mix.

A Good Easy Garlic Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 3, 2008
Really good! Used others suggestions: rubbed seasonings on chicken, sprinkled with flour and rubbed in right before putting in the pan, and used a tablespoon of butter with olive oil in the pan. I also added a little chicken stock to help it cook. Delicious!

Raspberry and Almond Shortbread Thumbprints

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2008
Definitely use more flour and keep the cookie sheet in the freezer between baking. I didn't have to freeze the dough the 2nd time I made these. Dough should be sticky, but not enough to stick to your hands.
