Vegetable Curry

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2011
Forgot I didn't have potatoes left so substituted turnip last minute. They had the same texture and taste, just a bit of radishy aftertaste. Recommended substitution.

Hoisin Pork Stir Fry

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2011
We liked this a lot. I tried to make it just like the recipe but got halfway through and realized I didn't have everything, so made a few substitutions. I didn't have water chestnuts so I added regular onion and a stalk of celery. I added salt and pepper to the pork since the recipe doesn't have salt. I didn't have cloves of garlic, so I added powdered garlic. (I just sprinkled it all over the pork. I didn't notice garlic flavor - I don't recommend this). Finally, I didn't even have cayenne so I added a tsp of ground chili paste. I didn't taste the spice, it wasn't enough. Despite my trying to make this fail, it was still great! The "sauce" is more a sticky coating of hoisin on everything. Hoisin is sweet, so if you don't like sweet, don't make this! If you love Hoisin, this is PERFECT!

Extra Easy Hummus

Reviewed: Sep. 13, 2011
After losing our Tahini-free hummus supplier when we moved away from Trader Joe's we requested and requested that our local grocery store carry a Tahini free variety (due to a sesame sensitivity). I feel silly for that now that I know how easy this is. 5 minutes, just as it said. I severely felt the lack of lemon, but one wedge of lemon added, and this was perfect. With our new wand blender, this was incredibly easy to whip up (and no blender cup to have to wash). Add the lemon though, it needs it!

Very good, but I like to add a cup of pulverized graham crackers for texture.

Easy Biscuit Mixture

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2007
I have never made any kind of bread before, and I was terrified, but this was SO EASY! I just added some milk until it looked like dough, and I didn't even have a biscuit cutter, so I just chopped some triangles with a dough cutter, and stuck them in my Japanese oven, where I have no idea what temperature it actually is and it STILL WORKED BEAUTIFULLY! I made enough for 6 servings, and I added about 1/2 cup of milk. I had every opportunity to screw this up, and it was still better than most biscuits I've ever had. Try it! For me, I would call it foolproof!

Sugar Cookie Frosting

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2006
Easy to make, great consistancy, and very very good taste. I couldn't get shortening here so I used butter. It still looked white. I used it for my sugar cookies and had enough left to frost a loaf of gingerbread, so if you're not making too much, 1/2 the recipe.

Eileen's Spicy Gingerbread Men

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2006
It was difficult to find margarine here, so I had to use butter. I had to add extra flour, probably I added a whole extra cup by the end, and rolled it out under some plastic wrap since they don't have parchement paper here. I got tired of cutting and frosting gingerbread men, so after awhile I just cut squares with a pizza cutter and frosted them with http://allrecipes.com/recipe/sugar-cookie-frosting/detail.aspx. They are SO GOOD with this frosting. They stayed moist too! I gave them as gifts and though most people here objected to the idea of something with ginger being sweet, the spices won them over. A new favorite in Japan!

Awesome Egg Rolls

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2006
These were so good! I made them as listed except I couldn't find canned shrimp here, but they did have canned crab so I used that. I couldn't taste it though so I think they'd be great vegetarian too. The taste was fantstic! However, I've never fried anything before, and I can't read the bottles here, so whichever kind of oil I happened to get had a strong taste. Choose oil wisely! Oh, and the soy sauce sunk to the bottom of my bowl, so the last one I made was more wet and the the wrapper fell apart in the oil. Be careful of too much sauce.

Denise's Peanut Chicken

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2006
I couldn't get broth, and didn't know the Japanese word for cornstarch, so I used boullion, and took the advice of thickening the sauce with a bit of peanut butter. Very tasty! I will make it again!
