Potato Leek Soup I

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2011
Fantastic! But like others have mentioned, it's quite thick and needed some thinning it out for it to be a soup, or you could eat it like mashed potatoes. I also ended up using probably only half the amount of butter and an extra stalk of leek.

Guyanese Lime Cookies

These were great! Simple and a refreshing taste. I had some thinner than others and those ones were a bit crispier but the others were kinda chewy. Both versions were great!

Oriental Sesame Slaw

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2008
this was fantastic! I didn't have jicama but added some finely chopped onion. A little runny but maybe that was because I was little under on the mayo since I ran out...still great anyway!

Grilled Pork Chops with Fresh Nectarine Salsa

Reviewed: Aug. 3, 2008
This was a refreshing summer meal! I would suggest though that if you're going to keep some for leftovers, to not use nectarines that are too ripe.

Nectarine Blush

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2008
This was great! It was a bit too sweet for me though so next time, I'll cut down the sugar a little. However, I didn't have buttermilk so I used some milk + vinegar and maybe that makes a difference in the amount of sugar needed.

Red Pepper Vinaigrette

Reviewed: Jun. 14, 2008
Really easy to make as everything is just tossed into a blender, and tastes great, refreshing! Also added a clove of garlic as others have suggested

Chicken with Green Peppers in Black Bean Sauce

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2008
Excellent, very yummy! I used trimmed, deboned and skinned chicken thighs instead though (more flavorful) and since the black bean sauce is already quite salty, I omitted the salt and cut down on the soy sauce to about 1 tsp. Forgot to get cilantro so I omitted that as well. Also added a little Chinese cooking wine.

Creamy Carrot Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2008
This was a really tasty soup and I loved the subtle and natural sweetness coming from the carrots. I ran out of normal white onions and used a handful of chopped green onions instead. I also used fresh ginger and replaced the cream with half boiled milk and half coconut milk. Was very simple to make and will definitely make again! Thanks!

Grandma's Heavenly Onions

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2007
Appearance-wise, this looked a little mushy but taste-wise, this was amazing! I used rye bread as that was what I had and what I needed to use up. Cream of chicken was also all I had on hand. I had some leftover rice and poured some of this over it and it was good! Easy and would definitely make it again.

Applesauce

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2007
I didn't know homemade applesauce was this easy...and so good too! I added a little nutmeg as well and blended it like others suggested (but I think I'll try it with some apple chunks next time). Didn't end up using as much sugar as suggested.

Fried Rice with Cilantro

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2007
So good!!! Probably among the best fried rice I've ever made! I didn't have the chillies or fish sauce so I left those out, but it was the cilantro (which I love) that made this recipe anyway! I was heating up leftovers in the microwave at work and coworkers said it smelled so good!

Adrienne's Cucumber Salad

Reviewed: May 29, 2007
This was good, but very vinegary and sweet - to me, it was like eating sweet pickles rather than a salad. But I think his will go very well on hamburgers. Inspired by some of the ingredients for the Korean Cucumber Salad recipe on this site, I also added some carrot slices and toasted sesame seeds (but next time, I think I will either omit the sesame, or sprinkle on top rather than having it soak as well since it made the colour strange)

Cream of Celery Soup

Reviewed: May 16, 2007
Wow, I can't believe how easy and how good this was, even without carrots, which I didn't happen to have any. I did add some garlic. Good way to use up celery. Like others, I also pureed the veggies and re-added them to the soup.

Baked Custard for Two

Reviewed: Apr. 25, 2007
I've never made custard before so maybe I did something wrong but this didn't end up the way I was hoping for. However, I did double the recipe and used a large foil round pan since I didn't have custard cups. Otherwise, I followed the recipe exactly. It came out a little too watery (there was liquid at the bottom, and I had also baked for a bit more than an hour), and I found the top (which was more congealed) to be much sweeter than the bottom.

Strawberry Cinnamon Oatmeal Muffins

Reviewed: Apr. 21, 2007
I made a few changes but my roommate thought these were the best muffins she ever had! As others suggested, I used whole wheat flour and brown sugar instead and added a handful of walnuts (makes them so much better!). I also substituted the olive oil with vanilla yogurt. The result is definitely very healthy and tasty! Like others, I also couldn't taste a strong strawberry flavour. I think next time I'll try it with strawberry yogurt and add a little bit more sugar. Didn't give this 5 stars due to all the modifications, but otherwise, this was an excellent base recipe!

Golden Yam Brownies

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2007
This was definitely a unique recipe and I loved these!! I used purple yams instead though, but only because that was what I just happened to have. I would also say that the texture was more cake-like than brownie-like. They were heavenly soft and had a fabulous aroma and taste. However, I found them a little too sweet (and I didn't even make the frosting) and will reduce the sugar next time.

Cookies for Rookies

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2007
I had a craving for homemade, big soft cookies but had no eggs at hand - this recipe fit the bill! They came out nice and soft, but with a slightly crisp bottom. Really liked them and was super easy to make. And just because I felt like having some spicy flavor, I also added some ground ginger(just a personal preference).

Szechuan Spicy Eggplant

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2006
I LOVE eggplant, especially Chinese restaurant style, and I found this very tasty! Really good over rice. The eggplant dishes were always my favourite dishes as a kid growing up in a Chinese home and I'm so glad I can make it myself at home now. I used Chinese eggplant (the long skinny kind), omitted shrimp and used ground pork instead of beef. I didn't have oyster sauce at home and used hoisin sauce instead. Will definitely make this again

Plum Dumplings

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2006
I had a bunch of extra plums that were too tart and wanted to find a way to use them up. I've never heard of plum dumplings before but thought it sounded interesting and I'm glad I gave them a try because they're delicious - such a great refreshing dessert!
