Wonderful Waffles

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2010
These were pretty good. I followed the recipe exactly (only a tiny bit of yolk got in with the egg whites so they didn't whip up as much as they would otherwise have done). We liked them but didn't think they were our favorite waffles ever. Like past reviewers said, there just wasn't that much flavor, even when I added blueberries.

P.J.'s Fresh Corn Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2010
My husband is not generally a fan of raw veggies, but he thought this was fantastic and ate almost the entire bowl by himself. I thought it was pretty good, but none of the kids would eat it. Thanks for helping me find a veggie recipe that got such high praise from my husband! I used the creamy Italian Dressing recipe from this site and that seemed to work well.

Creamy Italian Dressing I

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2010
It's been years since I have had Italian dressing, but I needed some for another recipe on this site, so I figured I would give this a try. It is pretty good. I used half as small yellow onion and it was not at all oniony as one reviewer had mentioned - perhaps they used a larger onion than I did. The only alteration I made was to sub 1/2 tsp minced garlic for the garlic powder. That seems like a nice amount, you can taste the garlic but it is not overpowering. I am looking forward to seeing how it tastes after it has rested overnight and allowed the flavors to mingle, but as of now, I am pretty pleased with the recipe, it gave me what I expected and needed, although it did not knock my socks off.

Watermelon and Strawberry Lemonade

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2010
This was okay, but I don't think I will be making it again. If I did, I would strain it, like other reviewers mentioned. It didn't taste very lemonade-y to me and was rather thick.

Cucumber-Watermelon Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2010
This was really disappointing for us. To be fair, I got called away in the middle of making it, and the watermelon and cucumber had to sit (after being tossed with the salt and sugar) for a while before I added the balsamic vinegar. When I came back, there was a lot of liquid to pour off. Otherwise, I followed the recipe exactly, but we weren't huge fans of the results. The cucumber tasted really salty, and overall it seemed like a waste of good ingredients (including a superb balsamic vinegar, the best I've ever had). The baby liked it, but no one else was wowed. I thought I would have liked to try it with feta like other reviewers suggested, but given how salty the cukes were, I don't think it would have been a good mix. I'm not sure if the wait really made that big of a difference, but I won't be trying it again to find out.

Watermelon Cooler Slushy

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2010
This was pretty good! I substituted three handsful of frozen strawberries for the ice cubes, as other reviewers suggested. I also only had bottled lime juice, so I used 1/4 cup of that, which tasted like the right amount. I am glad I didn't use more. I subbed agave nectar for the sugar to make it a little healthier. My husband agreed that it would taste better spiked with alcohol, but the kids all enjoyed it, it was a nice treat for them and a great way to use up extra watermelon. Thanks!

Lemon Pepper Cod

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2010
My husband and I both thought this was okay, but not great. My children each took one bite and refused to eat the rest. I thought they would like it because lemon pepper tilapia and trout is their favorite meal and they eat as much of it as I can give to them. This just didn't appeal that much to us.

Best Fried Green Tomatoes

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2010
I prepared these exactly according to the recipe (only cut in half because we did not have or need that many). I thought they were pretty good, and the baby liked them. But my husband and older children did not care for them. I think it was because the tomato turned out to be very sweet and they didn't like the sweet/salty combination. Thanks!

Big Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2010
WOW! These were amazing. I made them exactly according to the recipe except I accidentally only used 1 tsp of instant coffee and I would not change a thing. They're almost like a brownie in cookie form, and they are so so delicious, both warm from the oven and cooled later on. I used my 3 tbsp cookie scoop and got 11 gorgeous cookies. My kids devoured them and asked for more. The only thing I might do is lightly spray the pan next time, they stuck a little. But there will definitely be a next time, these were A++++ cookies and I'm already looking forward to making them again next time I need a chocolate fix. Thanks so much for the great recipe! ETA: We can't stop thinking about these, over a week later, I'm about to make them again. I would strongly recommend following the recipe the way it is written and not adding more flour, even if you are tempted to. When cooked, the texture of these is absolutely perfect, I think adding too much flour would really mess that up.

Marinated Flat Iron Steak

This was terrific! I've been searching for a while for a good soy-free marinade, and this will definitely be a keeper for our family. Thanks so much for the great recipe!

Refrigerator Pickles

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2010
These are very good! I followed the recipe exactly, although I did take other reviewers' recommendations and stick a clove of garlic in two of the jars. I couldn't stop snacking on them right off the bat and am looking forward to see how they taste after a few days in the jars. This made almost 4 pints for us. I think I could have included 8 cups of cucumbers instead of 7. Might try adding a pinch of alum next time like another reviewer recommended. thanks!

English Royalty Chocolate Chip Scones

Reviewed: Jul. 20, 2010
I have made this recipe many times over the past 5 years. I've tried a lot of other scone recipes, but we always keep coming back to this one, it is definitely the family favorite. I've noticed that sometimes I need to add a little extra orange juice, depending on the humidity. Thank you so much for the recipe, it is a lovely treat for us!

Marinated Flank Steak with Peppers

Reviewed: Jul. 17, 2010
This was very good. It's hard to find a soy-free beef marinade, but this is a great one for fajitas/flank steak. It definitely tasted very lime-y on its own (still tasty, but definitely lime-y), but when wrapped up in a tortilla with the sauteed veggies, cheese, fresh tomatoes, and guacamole, it was perfect. I'll be using this again next time I make flank steak fajitas. Thank you!

Seasoning For Tacos

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2010
We really like this taco seasoning mix, I've tried many on this site, but this is one of our favorites. My kids always ask for seconds on their taco meat when I make this. Thanks for the great recipe!

Baked Buffalo Wings

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2010
these were great. I made three different kinds of wings b/c I didn't think my kids would want these spicy ones but thought my husband would love them - well, he did love them, but my 5 yr old wouldn't touch the others, but loved "Daddy's chicken" as well. Next time, this will be the only recipe I make. I followed it exactly, using sriracha sauce for the hot sauce. Yum! thanks for the great recipe.

Wings with Mint Leaves and Honey

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2010
We were not crazy about these when made strictly according to the recipe. However, I had some leftover wings from another recipe that I had lightly coated with in a mixture of 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 tsp cayenne, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, and 1/2 tsp salt, and refrigerated for an hour. I spread the garlic mint mixture on top of those instead of trying to force it under the skin, and dipped them in the honey sauce and they turned out really well. We will probably make these again with that light coating of flour and spices and without the mint (we're not big mint lovers). The lemon honey butter sauce alone is 5+ stars. Some of it dripped onto my green beans and they were so good that I plan to make a batch of the sauce to toss with green beans next time I want a special side dish. Thank you!

Baked Chicken Wings

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2010
These were not that good. Although nicely crisped, they were surprisingly bland. I followed the recipe exactly, except for adding 1 tsp onion powder on the recommendation of other reviewers. My three children each took one bite and refused to eat any more although they usually like chicken. If I were to make these again, I would substitute garlic salt for the garlic powder. But I can't imagine that I will make them again.

Radish Top Soup

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2010
This was not that great for us, just okay. Even though I followed the recipe exactly and blended it a long time, it never seemed to get smooth, there were little fibrous bits of radish green that made you feel like you had to chew the soup. It was fun to try, but I don't think I will be making it again. Thanks anyway!

Parmesan Asparagus

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2010
this was okay but not stellar. I liked it, but the rest of my family prefers the other ways that we usually cook asparagus over this one. Still, it was fun to try something new. Thanks!
