B'stilla

Reviewed: Feb. 18, 2007
This really is very tasty, my husband and I both loved it. I remember something similar from a Moroccan restaurant, and agree with a previous reviewer that the cinnamon sugar should be on the top crust, with powdered sugar sprinkled on after it is baked. I also remembered nuts in the dish, so I added a couple of tablespoons of chopped slivered almonds to each layer. The next time I have a cocktail party, I think I will make individual servings of this in little squares of the puff pastry. Thanks Susan, this was a hit.

Glazed Ham with Peach-Ginger Sauce

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2007
I made the Peach-Ginger sauce to go with grilled pork chops. Yum! I had been trying to find something similar to the Grace's Kitchen peach sauce (a line of very good frozen meals) and this is close, using white balsamic vinegar and twice as much ginger (which I love). I also didn't put the pepper in. So my rating is perhaps a bit skewed but I'm so pleased with the result that I'm giving it a 5! I think it would probably be very good as stated too.

Sweet Mustard Chops

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2007
Very easy and tasty. The mustard gives a nice zing but is not overwhelming. I made this for company last week and everyone seemed to like it very well.

Jacky's Fruit and Yogurt Muffins

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2007
These came out really well with raspberry yogurt and raspberries (frozen). The flavor is good and they had a nice appearance. I found that the amount of batter was perfect to make 12 standard muffins.

Cornbread Pudding

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2007
I added 2 eggs and a stick of butter as others suggested. This was one of the most popular items on the table, I will definitely make it again. ETA: This year I forgot to get sour cream, so I used 3 oz. of cream cheese (softened and then stirred into the melted butter) plus a little half and half. Turned out great.

Cranberry Walnut Relish I

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2007
I used half orange and half apricot as another poster suggested. This is very easy and very good.

Cranberry Salad II

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2007
I am not a big fan of celery in "fruity" things so I replaced it with a chopped Granny Smith apple. I also did not grind the entire orange, I grated off the orange-only of the peel for the salad, then removed the bitter white rind before chopping up the fruit in the blender. The flavor definitely improves the next day, so make it the day before you need it.

Candy Cane Cookies II

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2007
Here's a tip for getting the crushed peppermint/sugar to stick to the cookies. Pour a little Karo light corn syrup into a microwave safe bowl, and put it in the microwave just long enough for it to become very runny, almost like water (maybe 20 seconds). Brush this onto the cookies (the silicone pastry brushes are great) and immediately sprinkle the topping on. I put the cookies on a wire rack with a sheet of waxed paper underneath. Let them dry completely before storing. You can do the sprinkling after the cookies cool, so that they're a little sturdier. BE CAREFUL with the hot Karo, it gets extremely hot very fast and could cause a very nasty burn. I adore these cookies and think they are well worth the trouble! I've made them for many years, my old recipe used half Crisco/half butter but is otherwise identical.

Individual Beef Wellingtons

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2007
I love this recipe because it is great to have something so easy that makes dinner feel like a very special occasion. I like to roll out extra puff pastry to make shapes to decorate the tops, and brush with a beaten egg before baking to give it a pretty golden color. I also brown the steaks first (and let them cool before wrapping).

Carrot and Raisin Salad II

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2007
I added a little ground ginger and a small orange that I chopped into small pieces. My husband said it was the best carrot raisin salad he had ever tasted.

Broccoli Salad II

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2007
I added some thinly sliced red onion and cashews. Dried cherries instead of raisins (although raisins would be really good too). I didn't think I had enough broccoli for the number I wanted to serve, so I added part of a package of coleslaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots) and it was something new and very good - there were many compliments and no leftovers.

Very easy and very good! I counted to 90 just to make sure I boiled long enough and that worked fine.

Barbequed Marinated Flank Steak

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2008
This marinade gave a very nice well-balanced flavor. We loved it. I used it on chunks of beef tenderloin that I skewered and baked for a few minutes at 450. They looked and tasted great.

I thought these were good. Next time I might replace some of the butter with peanut butter and use peanut butter chips.

Banana Pancakes I

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2008
These were excellent banana pancakes! I also added 1/2 tsp vanilla. In addition to the 2 "mushed up" bananas, I diced up another one to add. I think it would be fun to dice up a few strawberries to add to this.

Quick and Easy Pizza Crust

I liked this crust, it's similar to what you'd get with a boxed 2 pizza mix. Very nice to have this recipe when you want pizza quick.

Ham with Cherry Sauce

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2008
I used tart cherries for this - my husband loved it. I actually think I will use this recipe to make the filling the next time I make cherry pie. The sauce is quite sweet, but I think that goes well with ham. The recipe doesn't state if the can of cherries should be drained or not. I used the juice from the can and only had to add a little water to make 1 cup of liquid. This make a very thick sauce, similar to pie filling (hence my note above).

Shredded Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2008
We really loved this recipe as written. I later made a variation where I cooked down some sliced onions, then added the shredded sprouts, then some aspargus cut in pieces, and finally some halved cherry tomatoes.
