About this Cook
I've been cooking with my mom for several years, but always the same recipes. Since moving out and getting married, I've wanted to branch out, and learn some tips and basics so I can start inventing my own recipes. I've started experimenting more lately, and though I'm not really inventing (anything good) yet, I'm generally comfortable with my ability to change up recipes to better meet our tastes or to avoid a shopping trip.
My favorite things to cook
Pasta dishes, Chicken Dishes and DESSERTS!
My cooking triumphs
Modifying a pancake recipe into strawberry pancakes - they're pretty much the only pancakes we eat now. Citrus rice and pineapple salsa - made them without a recipe along with some chicken one night - everything went together great and we loved the change in flavors from our usuals. And just recently I mixed an Asian inspired marinade for some beef just as I went - my fiance thought it was great!
My cooking tragedies
I decided to start making cakes from scratch instead of box mixes. I make my own icing and thought it's be nice to do the whole thing myself. The cake had good flavor, but was a little dry and fell into LOTS of pieces. I'm pretty sure my problem was the beaten eggwhites, but I didn't try another cake from scratch at all for months. I still haven't tried one requiring beaten eggwhites, but at least now I know some other great cake recipes (that I can make correctly).

Cheese Fondue
Good enough to eat, but I don't plan on making it again. Not sure what exactly to put my finger on, but the flavor was not appealing to me. I was snacking on the extra cheese I had before hand and was pleased with the quality of what I bought, I've used the same wine before in other recipes, and I'm accustomed to nutmeg paired with creamy/cheesy dishes, but the combination in this recipe didn't suit me.

Aunt Bert's White Cake
I have this cake in the oven now, at the request of my mother. I've made it countless times - all sizes, from cupcakes to my mother's full sized wedding cake. I've always made it just as the recipe states, and NEVER had a problem. It is dense, and very moist. My husband, who is chocolate cake purist, will eat, and more importantly enjoy eating, this cake. For every event I've used this cake recipe (I'm not a baker by profession, just a baker/cake decorator by hobby), people have loved it and remarked it is one of or the best white cake they've tasted. The color is not "white" for those who are looking for a pure white color for decorating purposes (because of the yolks), but it hasn't been a problem for me.

Creamy Coleslaw
This is great! I didn't really use everything - I decided to keep it simple with just cabbage and carrots for my toddler, but the dressing is wonderful and she's eating it right up! The sour cream is a nice touch and I like the lack of sugary sweetness. On my plate I added a bit of salt and pepper, which maybe wouldn't be needed with all the other additions for flavor, but my daughter isn't asking for any.
