Very, very plain and I added the zest of a lemon to the batter because I had it around. Also they spread and so didn't look very good either. Dough was very difficult to work with. I am going to go with a butter cookie that has a little more flavor and some baking powder next time!

Jumpin' Java Cookies

I agree with other reviewers that 1) the batter was runny. I added a few more tablespoons of flour but they still spread quite a bit. And 2) that they didn't really taste like coffee. But because they had a cake-y texture they were perfect for sandwich cookies. So I made the mocha frosting from a brownie recipe on this site and made sandwiches. Probably won't make again because somewhat time consuming to get what you want. But together the flavors and textures were good.

Creole Hot Water Cornbread

I think this is a novel variation on cornbread--which is why I tried it, but I was disappointed in the flavor. I like cornbread with spicy foods to temper the spice so there was a little to much heat in here without enough sweet to balance it out. Great texture though. I used vegetable shortening for frying--keeps it vegetarian-friendly.

Apple Oatmeal Bars

Not very impressed. Added cinnamon and nutmeg and was still on the bland side. Not very bar-like. Ended up throwing out half the pan. I agree with the reviewer who mentioned the too predominant taste of salt and soda. There was something just a little bit off in the flavor.

Easy Chocolate Cookies

Not bad tasting; moist and chewy. But not worth the hassle. They spread very thin in the oven and are difficult to get off pan even with greased cookie sheet and spatula. I would rather just make brownies.

Jesse and Steve's Fresh Strawberry Cake

I was disappointed by the recipe. I made some of the modifications suggested by others (adding more strawberries for one) and though the flavor was okay (including the glaze) the cake itself was dense and more like a bar cookie. With all the modifications suggested throughout perhaps someone should just write a new recipe!
