Amish Friendship Bread Starter

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2009
This starter has been going around and around my church and office for a while now so I'm glad that I can now take a little break and make it at a later time. I kept making it because I didn't want to lose the starter. I haven't tried freezing the starter, but the bread made with it freezes very well. I'm so thankful for all of the suggestions from other reviews. Next time I'll make it with bananas or apples or maybe even zucchini. All sound yummy.

Homemade Vanilla Pudding

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2009
I made this with some changes that were suggested by others and from my own experience (you never mix cornstarch into a hot liquid): Whisking cold milk into dry ingredients, doubling the vanilla, and cutting down on the sugar. I thought the taste was very good, however, I prefer the extra richness that adding egg yolks bring so I'll probably stick with my other recipe.

Teriyaki Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2009
Excellent! I liked that I could prepare and marinate the night before then just pop it in the oven to have ready for dinner. Will be adding this to my normal rotation.

Roasted New Potatoes

These potatoes are great! Perfect mixture of tastes. Served them with the Teriyaki Chicken from this site. Better than any restaurant meal.

Cream of Chicken with Wild Rice Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2008
This is one of the best soups I have ever made. I made the recipe as stated except I added some chopped carrots in with the celery and onions for my toddler grandson. (I like to make sure he gets lots of veggies.) The whole family loved it, which is quite rare.

Grandma Ople's Apple Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2008
Wow! This pie is great! I've made many different recipes over the years and this one will replace all the others. I added a little bit of cinnamon to the syrup because of personal preference, but besides that, left the recipe as-is. I like the glaze that it put on the lattice top. Served warm with a bit of home-made vanilla ice-cream on top....doesn't get any better than that!!! Thanks for sharing this heirloom recipe.

Marinated Grilled Shrimp

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2008
Was looking for a quick way to prepare shrimp for the grill with ingredients that I had on hand. These turned out perfect! Family loved them....it was "every man for himself" when I put them on the table! Think that this recipe would also go good on scallops and tuna steak.

Best of the Best Blueberry Muffins

Reviewed: May 28, 2008
The best blueberry muffins I've ever made and I've tried many recipes. I found the texture to be very pleasant and the taste is wonderful. Only change made was sprinkling the top with cinammon sugar instead of plain sugar.

Creamy Vidalia Onion Soup

This soup has a wonderful flavour. I omitted the eggs and found the texture to be perfect. Can't wait to have the leftovers for lunch today.

Fudge Truffle Cheesecake

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2008
This cake was delicious but very rich. Garnished with whipped cream and strawberries for Easter dessert. Only thing I changed was the crust. Instead of the crust given, I crushed up some chocolate wafers and mixed with a little butter.

Very easy way to decorate my Easter cookies. The colours were vibrant and just looked beautiful.

Coconut Cream Pound Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 15, 2008
I'm giving this 5 stars for taste even though mine did crumble when I cut it. I love the moistness and texture. I also used dessicated coconut as another reviewer suggested. Great with whipped cream and strawberries on top.

Banana Cream Pie I

Reviewed: Mar. 15, 2008
Excellent recipe! I did as others suggested and used 1/2 cornstarch and 1/2 flour as the thickener. Also, another reviewer suggested that there wasn't enough banana flavour. I've always used banana extract instead of vanilla. Adds a rich banana flavour. (I also use coconut extract in my coconut cream pie.)

White Chocolate, Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 27, 2008
I'm giving these 4 stars because I made a few minor changes and I think that, without the changes, they would've been 4 star worthy. Changes made - added 1/2 tsp salt (salt brings out the flavour of chocolate), added 1 tsp vanilla, used 1/2 white chips and 1/2 milk chocolate chips because that was all I had. Didn't grease pan. They spread beautifully and stayed soft and chewy. Like a brownie with great fudgy flavour. Yum.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2008
Excellent cornbread - very buttery tasting. Will replace all of my other recipes with this one. I cut the sugar in half because of personal preference. Great paired up with a nice hot bowl of chili.

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2008
Made this for a church dinner and everyone loved it, I thought, however, it was just all right. I will make it again, but with some changes. I'd doubled the amount of chocolate and still couldn't really taste it in the final product, so I may omit it altogether since it just seemed to make it too sweet. Instead I'll use more of the raspberry sauce. The tartness of the sauce was a nice balance for the sweetness, but I would've liked more raspberry flavour in the cake. I baked mine in a water bath since I always do my cheesecakes in water bath. Never had a problem with cracking. Anyway, I'm sure a little tweaking for my personal taste will bump it up to 5 stars.

Cranberry Ice

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2008
This was used as a palate cleanser. Very good, but I halved the recipe. A little goes a long way. Next time I'll finish it off in my ice cream maker to give it a softer consistency as another reviewer suggested.

Best Ever Creamy Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2008
I had to add more water to thin this soup. Also added extra bouillon for more flavor, but in the end, the soup tasted great and was very healthy. I used an immersion blender so I'd still have some chunks. I may cut down on the potatoes next time.

Italian Bread Using a Bread Machine

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2008
Delicious bread! Better than the recipe I usually use. I liked the fact that it made 2 loaves. I froze the dough for the second one so we'll have it for another time. Nice rise and the texture was perfect.
