About this Cook
I am the eldest of 10 children. My mother and father were very supportive of all my endeavors. I am a Reistered Nurse working with clients with brain injury.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake just about everything including bread, rolls, cakes, and cookies. I love to make my own recipes and my three sons always had plenty of friends around ready to taste test. I also like to make soups, stews, chili and love to slow cook pork barbeque .
My favorite family cooking traditions
My great grandmother, b.1876 d.1973, was famous for her yummy homemade rolls. My maternal grandmother was the best pie baker in southern Iowa and Northern Missouri. She made her pie crust with lard and they were so flaky and light!! My Dad is crazy about gooseberry pies and he always begged her to make him one when we would go for visits.
My cooking triumphs
I guess the best compiment I ever received was during a family reunion when my nephew said that my corn chowder was 'the meaning of life'.My nieces love my 'fluff' which was also made at that family reunion. My husband's family always insisted I bring homemade rolls to any family gathering.Small things that make us love to cook.
My cooking tragedies
As I said earlier I was the eldest of 10 children and was used to cooking for a crowd. When my husband and I were newlyweds I made spaghetti and proudly presented it. To be frugal of course we had left-overs. On the 3rd night my sweetheart dumped the still huge amount of pasta in the trash and told me he did not want any more for a LONG time.

Harden Your Arteries Pie Crust
My grandmother back in Iowa summers used to make this crust for all her pies and they were the very best pies ever. The lard adds a wonderful oldtime taste.

Dutch Apple Cake
Excellent! I made it just the way it reads using superfine baker's sugar and it is so light nit almost floated off the plate. My son said it tastes like 'autumn sunshine'. Definitely a keeper!

Hungarian Flourless Hazelnut Cake
This is a recipe I have not thought of in almost 40 years. Every year a friend of my mom-in-law would make her 2 of these beauties only she made them in tube pans and traded them for a goose that she got at the commissary. Thanks for bringing it back for me!
